Job description

We are looking for a Lifeguard to ensure safe swimming conditions for all guests in our pool area, deck, and surrounding areas. The Lifeguard creates a safe and positive atmosphere and promotes safety in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
• Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately, completing related reports as required.
• Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic areas.
• Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or local and state health department code.
• Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
• Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
• Maintains branch and association certifications in CPR‑O, YMCA Lifeguard, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, Branch and off‑site Emergency procedures, and any other certifications required by Metro Atlanta YMCA.
• Assists as needed in all aspects of the YMCA and its community.
• Attends all staff meetings and monthly in‑service training.
• Shows up 15 minutes prior to shift start time.
• Wears the approved YMCA Lifeguard uniform and carries required equipment.

Requirements

• Minimum age of 16.
• Current YMCA Lifeguard certification or equivalent; if not YMCA, must cross over within the first 60 days.
• Basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen administration.
• Ability to respond in a timely manner to safety and emergency situations.
• Exemplify YMCA ideals and leadership qualities.
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Strong customer service skills and personal commitment to service and hospitality.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Physically perform all lifeguard duties: hear distress signals, remain alert, see and observe all areas of responsibility, and meet the physical requirements of the job.

Employment Requirements

• Pass a pre‑employment background check including criminal record, drug screening, motor vehicle record, and reference check.
• Be legally eligible to work in the U.S. without current or future sponsorship.
