Job description

Our Lifeguard is responsible to ensure the safety of swimmers at Chilson Recreation Center Pool and Winona Outdoor Pool. Must be available to work some evenings, weekend and holiday hours. The salary range for this position is $14.81 - $18.36 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. Must be at least 15 years of age at time of hire. All offers are conditional upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check and pre-employment drug screen.

Essential Functions:

  • Enhances the Recreation Department image and ensures a quality visit to aquatics area.
  • Ensures the safety of guests by observing swimmers at all times.
  • Effectively responds to emergency situations and performs lifesaving procedures.
  • Recordkeeping and assisting in cleaning the pool and surrounding area(s).
  • Establishes and maintains a good public relations image with facility guests through proper communications, positive interactions and consistent enforcement of all policies and procedures.
  • Disseminates and promotes Parks & Recreation program information and directs guests to proper locations.
  • Resolves team or patron concerns through positive interaction, collaboration and the application of appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Attends regularly scheduled staff meetings and in-service trainings.
  • Consistently reports to work properly outfitted/equipped as outlined in staff policies.

Other Job Functions:

  • May be required to cross train in other areas for duties.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience:

  • Prior lifeguarding experience preferred.
  • Customer service-related experience preferred.
  • Must be 15 years of age at the time of hire.

Certifications:

  • Current Lifeguard Certification, CPR, AED and First Aid certification required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must recognize and react quickly and correctly in emergency situations in order to perform required lifesaving procedures.
  • Make sound judgments, exercise conflict resolution and exhibit patience when dealing with stressful and/or disciplinary situations.
  • Safely and properly use required equipment.
  • Must possess knowledge of all rules and regulations pertaining to water safety including all authorized signals and emergency procedures.
  • Follow both verbal and written instructions and communicate in a friendly, positive and professional manner with co-workers and the general public.
  • Must possess proven excellent customer service skills.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Light to moderate physical effort that includes frequent standing or walking or maintaining arms and hands in the same position for repetitive tasks. Frequently works with light objects and light hand tools.
  • Occasional moderate to considerable physical effort that includes working from ladders in awkward positions. Frequent use of light or medium weight objects (e.g., 25-50 lbs) and use of medium weight tools.
  • Minimal physical effort typically found in clerical work. Primarily sedentary, may occasionally lift and carry light objects. Walking and/or standing as needed and minimal.
  • Strenuous to extreme physical effort that includes frequent use of heavy objects (e.g., 50+ pounds) and may also use heavy tools or require strenuous application in awkward positions.

Working Environment:

  • Frequent exposure to heat and noise along with working outside in the elements.
  • Occasional exposure to hazards that are predictable or well protected against.
  • Exposure to routine office noise and equipment.
  • Exposure to hazards typically found in general office environments where there is rarely to no exposure to injury or accident.
  • Exposure to marginal to moderate conditions that are unpredictable and may lead to injury.
  • Exposure to hazardous conditions that may lead to workplace injury such as working in heights, exposure to fly ash and/or energized electrical equipment.
