Chautauqua Institution offers two public beaches and two public waterfronts. Select waterfront areas provide lifeguards; swimming is only allowed when lifeguards are on duty. These beaches are open daily, noon–6 p.m. (weather, staffing, and water conditions permitting) from June 21 - August 24.

About Your Compensation

Compensation starts at $16.00/hour; with experience and qualifications, candidates may earn up to $18.25/hour.

About Lifeguard Certification

New York's Department of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation will host a Lifeguard Certification Course at Chautauqua Institution's Health & Fitness Center in Turner Community Center in Chautauqua, NY. This course covers lifeguard, waterfront lifeguard, first aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Candidates interested in employment as a lifeguard and receiving a contingent offer are encouraged to enroll. The cost is $175, payable by May 28 after passing the pre-requisite test. Chautauqua will reimburse this fee upon successful course completion, certification, and employment start.

Mandatory attendance dates for Summer 2025 include: May 28, May 30, May 31, June 1, June 3, June 5, June 6, June 8, with specific times and location details provided.

Eligibility: Candidates must be at least 15 years old, pass a swimming pre-requisite test, and complete a water test involving swimming, treading water, diving, and underwater retrieval.

If you complete a qualifying certification elsewhere, you may be eligible for fee reimbursement upon hire.

Workday Responsibilities

  • Respond appropriately to emergencies following procedures.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and cleanliness.
Referral Program

Receive a $500 referral bonus (taxes deducted) for successful hires who remain employed for specified periods.

Work Schedule

Flexible seasonal schedules typically include evenings, weekends, and holidays, with shifts starting between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., totaling 24-36 hours weekly, including at least one weekend shift.

Housing

Limited on-ground housing options may be available; candidates should plan accordingly as employer-provided housing is not guaranteed.
