Job summary

Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park & Recreation District is seeking a Lifeguard to maintain safe swimming conditions and ensure a positive, secure environment at the island’s aquatic center.

You will monitor patrons, enforce rules, deliver CPR/First Aid when needed, and perform water-quality checks. Training courses will be provided; strong communication and teamwork are essential to support staff and patrons.

Qualifications

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification required.
  • At least 15 years of age.
  • Strong swimming skills.
  • American Red Cross Water Park Guard Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain constant surveillance of pool, deck and patrons; enforce facility rules.
  • Provide first aid and CPR as required.
  • Respond quickly to emergencies and spot hazards to prevent accidents.
  • Perform pool chemistry checks and report imbalances to management.
  • Report maintenance issues to management in a timely manner.
  • Perform basic computer tasks including data entry and logging in/out of the timesheet system.
  • Maintain work schedule and attendance; be ready to start on shift.
  • Know and follow all District policies and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with the public and staff, both written and verbal.
  • Attend trainings and certification courses as required.
  • Provide exceptional customer service and clear signage about schedules and information.

Job description

The Lifeguard has responsibility for maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes safety and recreation in accordance with all District policies, procedures, guidelines and best practices.

  • Represent Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park & Recreation District wearing appropriate uniform on shift and acting in a professional manner at all times.
  • Maintain constant and effective surveillance of aquatics facility and patrons and enforce facility rules.
  • Provide first aid and CPR as required.
  • Respond quickly and decisively to any and all emergencies and take care to spot hazards as well as potential hazards and proactively take measures to avoid accidents.
  • Perform and document pool chemistry checks and report imbalances to management in a timely manner.
  • Report maintenance issues to management in a timely manner.
  • Perform basic computer task including data entry, updating spreadsheets and logging in and out of computerized timesheet system.
  • Maintain work schedule and vacation request electronically.
  • Maintain regular and timely attendance and be ready to start work when shift begins.
  • Know, understand, and implement various safety rules and guidelines and ensure all activities are executed appropriately.
  • Know and follow all District policies and procedures.
  • Work effectively and communicate with the public and co-workers in both written and oral forms.
  • Attend and complete all trainings and certification courses as required.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to patrons and staff, maintaining appropriate signage regarding schedules and information at the facility.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification required

  • American Red Cross Water Park Guard Certification preferred
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to act quickly and calmly in an emergency situation.
  • Maintain a fitness and mental level consistent with readiness to respond to emergency situations.
  • Ability to perform rescue actions and administer CPR and First Aid as needed.
  • Work well independently as well as part of a team.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing.
Work Environment and Physical Effort

This is a non-smoking workplace. The work environment is mainly indoors. Work is performed in an aquatics center. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.   • Must be able to hear distress noises and hear and see distress signals in a noisy aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere in the zone of responsibility.
  • Will require long periods of sitting or standing in a hot, humid and noisy environment.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, grab, pull and push objects in or out of water, squat down, stoop, kneel, crouch and jump.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Hours will vary depending on the pool schedule and may include early morning, weekend, holiday and evening shifts.
