Lifeguard and Junior Lifeguard

The Lifeguard and Junior Lifeguard provide supervision and ensure a safe environment at the camp’s aquatic activities. They assist in managing the physical operation of waterfront facilities and equipment and support unit functions. Responsibilities include planning, teaching, coordinating, and executing activities with campers. This is a seasonal overnight camp position, from May to August, based at Camp Tuckaho in Troy, Missouri. The position requires on-site living during the camp duration.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Assist with general office duties as assigned
  • Support an environment of physical and emotional safety for campers and staff; establish and maintain positive relationships with campers
  • Assist with camp setup, closing, and other related tasks
  • Prepare for camper arrivals by reviewing rosters and maintaining confidentiality; coordinate health services as needed
  • Live in an assigned unit with other staff and campers
  • Help supervise and organize campers within their living units, activities, and throughout the camp
  • Participate in developing and implementing camper programs aligned with the mission and outcomes
  • Assist program staff in supervision and instruction at activity areas
  • Lead designated program activities
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety standards in assigned areas
  • Set a positive example in procedures, sanitation, schedules, and sportsmanship
  • Serve as a role model in attitude and behavior
  • Supervise and guard waterfront activities
  • Assess campers' aquatics abilities
  • Support waterfront instructional staff in swimming and boating programs
  • Ensure safety procedures are followed during activities
  • Manage and care for waterfront facilities and equipment, conducting daily safety checks and cleaning
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Meet GSUSA membership requirements; minimum age of 18 for Lifeguard and 16 for Junior Lifeguard
  • Adhere to Girl Scout policies, standards, and ACA standards
  • Experience working with children and outdoor skills; ability to teach outdoor skills
  • Demonstrate leadership, good judgment, flexibility, and a positive attitude
  • Possess energy, stamina, patience, and enjoy outdoor group living
  • ARC Waterfront Module preferred
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • American Red Cross First Aid and CPR certifications or willingness to obtain
  • ARC Lifeguarding certification or willingness to obtain
  • Small Craft Safety: Canoeing or willingness to obtain

If driving is required, a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record are necessary.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to talk, hear, stand, walk, and perform active tasks including bending, kneeling, and crouching
  • Reach with hands and arms
  • Regularly lift/move up to 25 pounds
EXPOSURES

Work involves indoor and outdoor environments, with exposure to weather, dirt, and dust.
