Join our team at Camp Hoffman as a Lifeguard and help create unforgettable experiences for campers in an immersive and fun-filled environment. As a Lifeguard, you will educate campers in boating and water safety, supervise open swim sessions and boating activities, and act calmly and efficiently in emergencies.
Schedule:
- Day Staff Lifeguard: June 23rd to August 20th (Monday-Friday), Off July 4th
- Overnight Staff Lifeguard: June 23rd to August 20th (Sunday-Friday), Off July 4th
Day staff will have one hour of time off each day. Overnight staff will have two hours of scheduled time off daily, one evening per week off with a set curfew, and be off from Friday evening to Sunday morning.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participate in the daily implementation of the aquatics program, working cooperatively with the Waterfront Director to enrich all-camp and aquatic activities.
- Facilitate and engage in waterfront activities (swimming, canoeing, kayaking, water games, etc.) while actively guarding the safety of all participants.
- Prepare and conduct water safety instruction, enforce safety protocols at all times.
- Assist in assessing campers' swimming skills for classification and ensure swim assessments are completed.
- Participate in all emergency drills including aquatics emergencies.
- Work collaboratively with other lifeguards and camp staff.
- Follow a schedule with punctuality and flexibility for unexpected changes.
- Assist in camp opening and closing procedures.
- Perform daily waterfront setup, maintenance, and cleanup.
- Ensure the health and safety of campers, reporting concerns promptly.
- Keep records, reports, and inventories as required.
- Adhere to Girl Scout, State of Rhode Island, and American Camp Association standards and policies.
- Assist in all aspects of campers' daily routines and activities.
- Live in a unit near campers or in a cabin with campers as assigned (overnight staff).
- Day staff may opt to work as a bus monitor or overnight on Thursdays.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Must be 16 years or older by June 23rd, 2025.
- Current Red Cross lifeguard certification or ability to obtain prior to June 23rd, 2025.
- Current RIDEM Non-surf or Surf Lifeguard Certification or ability to obtain.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physical and visual ability to respond to hazards and emergencies, uphold safety standards.
- Previous experience in Girl Scouts, camps, boating, or lifeguarding is a plus but not required.
- Reliable transportation for day staff.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Ability to walk, run, stand, crouch, swim, and sit for long periods.
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Perform strenuous water and craft rescues.
- Work outdoors for extended periods, exposed to weather conditions.
- Walk on rough and uneven terrain.
- Live and work in a rustic outdoor environment (overnight staff).
