Job summary

The Mandell Jewish Community Center is hiring lifeguards to oversee pool safety across three West Hartford area sites. The role requires vigilant surveillance, rapid emergency response, and provision of first aid or CPR as needed.

You’ll enforce rules, assist with aquatic programming, and help maintain a clean, safe environment aligned with the camp’s mission. Qualified candidates may hold lifeguard and CPR certifications; First Aid and Water Safety Instructor credentials are a plus.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 16 or equivalent work experience considered.
• Lifeguard, First Aid and CPR certification required or preferred.
• Water safety and pool rules knowledge are essential.

Lifeguard positions are available at our 3 sites: West Hartford, Bloomfield, Windsor

FUNCTION

The Lifeguard ensures the safety and well-being of campers and staff during aquatic activities. This role involves monitoring pool areas, enforcing safety rules, resounding to emergencies, and providing first aid or CPR as necessary. Lifeguards maintain a vigilant presence, assist with aquatic programming, and support a positive and inclusive environment that aligns with the camp’s mission. This role is responsible for inspecting equipment, maintaining cleanliness and adhering to all safety and health regulations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Member Services

• Create a warm, welcoming environment for all members, guests, and staff
• Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency
• Provide safe environment for all ages
• Act as representative of the program within the community
• Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services within the boundaries of your certification

Facility Management

• Responsible for the care of the equipment
• Performs various duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility by helping keep the pool deck and recreational areas clear of all debris
• Enforce the Club’s rules and regulations: no running on deck
• Collect water samples in each pool and properly records and informs appropriate staff of any issues
• Performs various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility by helping keep the locker rooms, pool deck and recreational areas clear of all debris
• Keep the lounge chairs clean and neatly arranged

Customer Service

• Provide excellent customer service, both internally and externally
• Resolve customer problems and conflicts
• Responds promptly to customer needs
• Solicit customer feedback to improve services.

Other Job Duties

• Attend all orientations and meetings prior to and throughout the camp season.

QualificationsJOB QUALIFICATIONS

• Education: Minimum 16 years of age. Individuals with equivalent work experience and appropriate training may be considered.
• Licensure: Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Water Safety Instructor (preferred)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff
• Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques
• Ability to observe staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate management techniques
• Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the challenge course
• Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers
• Ability to take initiative and direction
• Knowledge and passion to work with children

• Ability to consistently deliver quality customer service
• Must have the ability to enforce all facility rules and policies in a gentle but firm manner to people of all ages
• Must have a detailed understanding of pool safety and rules specific to the Swim & Tennis club

SPECIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Must be able to swim to a depth of 12 feet and bring a victim to the surface
• Must be able to tread water for 5 minutes
• Must be able to jump into the water from a height of 6 feet
• Must be able to pass a pre-test consisting of a 500 yard swim, demonstrate a deep water rescue lift and a spinal immobilization technique
