Job summary

YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties is hiring a part-time Aquatics Staff / Lifeguard at the Tacoma Center YMCA in downtown Tacoma, WA. The role focuses on lifeguarding, safety, and youth swimming instruction for members aged 15 and older.

Hourly wage ranges from $18.00 to $18.50, with up to 25 hours per week. The position emphasizes independence, vigilance, and a welcoming environment in a one-guard pool setting.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 16 or older.
• Six months or more aquatics experience preferred.
• Current Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, First Aid, and Oxygen certifications preferred.
• Must pass Background and Reference checks per WA State Fair Chance Act.
• Commitment to diversity and inclusive environment.
• Must complete online Child Abuse Prevention training on first day and other trainings as required.

Responsibilities

• Always ensure member safety by scanning water and pool deck, enforcing rules, and following YMCA procedures.
• Instruct swimming lessons in basic and advanced strokes to youth members.
• Perform rescue actions, administer first aid and CPR per YMCA policies and the "safe-in-six" model; complete reports.
• Prepare class lesson plans with a progression suitable for ages and abilities.
• Know and apply safety rules for pool and aquatic areas.
• Attend monthly/quarterly/annual training and certification courses.
• Maintain positive relationships with members, participants, and staff.

Location

Tacoma Center YMCA (Downtown Tacoma), Tacoma, WA

Join the aquatics team at our adult-only facility in downtown Tacoma, serving members ages 15 and older. As a one-guard pool, lifeguards must be attentive, dependable, and confident working independently while maintaining a safe and welcoming environment. If hired for this position, you will also be responsible for promoting member engagement and safety by maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Qualifications

• Minimum age of 16 years or older.
• Six months or more of related Aquatics experience (preferred).

Key Responsibilities

• Always ensuring the safety of our members by vigilantly scanning the water and pool deck areas, monitoring activities, identifying safety issues and concerns, enforcing rules, and following YMCA emergency procedures and protocols.
• Instructing swimming lessons in basic and advanced stroke skills to youth members.
• Performing necessary rescue actions, administering first aid and CPR in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six” model; completing related reports as required.
• Preparing class lesson plans with a natural progression of appropriate skills for the abilities and ages of the classes.
• Knowing, understanding, consistently communicating, and applying safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic areas.
• Attending monthly, quarterly, and/or annual training and certification courses.
• Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants, and other staff.
