DESCRIPTION
The Lifeguard ensures the safety and supervision of students, staff, and visitors in the school swimming pool. The position requires vigilant monitoring, enforcement of safety policies, and immediate response to emergencies while fostering a positive and supportive environment for all participants.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Applicants must be high school or vocational school graduates or possess an approved High School Equivalent Certificate.
- Applicants must possess current and valid lifeguard certification issued by American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, National Pool and Waterpark, Lifeguard Training, the YMCA or other recognized organizations.
- Applicants must possess current and valid standard First Aid certification issued by the American Red Cross, The National Safety Council or other recognized organizations.
- Applicants must possess current and valid CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certification including adult, child and infant CPR as well as obstructed airway training issued by the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, the National Safety Council or other recognized organizations.
- Applicants may also be required to possess current and valid AED (automatic external defibrillator) certification.
- Applicants may be required to have training in supplemental oxygen support for adults, children and infants.
- Applicants must have strong swimming and rescue skills.
- Applicants must have effective communication and interpersonal skills, especially with children and adolescents.
- It is preferred that applicants have experience in a school, youth recreation, or aquatics setting.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervises all aquatic activities to prevent accidents and injuries.
- Patrols or monitors swimming areas to ensure safety and enforce rules and regulations.
- Rescues distressed bathers, using floats and other rescue equipment.
- Administers artificial respiration, resuscitation, and first aid treatment prior to the arrival of emergency medical staff.
- Cooperates with medical and law enforcement personnel at the scene of an emergency.
- Assists in cleaning the pool and related facilities and equipment.
- Warns swimmers of improper activities or danger and enforces rules, regulations and water safety policies.
- Informs bathers of restrictions in bathing area.
- Assists students, including those with disabilities or special needs, in safely accessing the pool.
- Maintains essential records and files.
- Conducts regular inspections of pool facilities and reports maintenance or safety concerns.
- Maintains rescue equipment in preparation for immediate response.
- Maintains accurate records of incidents, accidents, and safety checks.
- Collaborates with teachers and staff during swim classes.
- Participates in required safety drill and professional development.
- Maintains professional conduct and serves as a positive role model for students.
REMUNERATION
$25 per hour, 5.55 hours per day according to the district calendar.
