ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
- Knowsandreviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situationsimmediatelyin accordance withYMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six” model; completes related reports asrequired.
- Maintains effective and positive relationships withthe members, participants, and other staff.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies,and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Remains calm andobjectivewhen under pressure or when challenged by others.
- Maintainsaccuraterecords as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code.
- Performs equipment checks and ensuresappropriate equipmentis available as needed.
- Checksthe pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
- Performs chemical testing when not guarding, asrequired, and takesappropriate action.
- Attends all staff meetings and in-service training.
- Responsible forappropriate child-adultratios and group sizes.
- Assistsinmaintainingcleanliness of deck and locker rooms.
- Responsible for opening and closing procedures and securingdoor.
- Report to duty 10 minutes beforeshiftand secure a substitute if necessary and with proper notification.
- Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimumage of 15 years old.
- Child abuse prevention training within30 daysof hire date
- Ability tomaintaincertification-level physical and mental readiness
- Mustdemonstratelifeguard skillsin accordance withYMCA standards
- RequiredCertifications:YMCA approved basiclife savingto include CPR, AED, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen administration
- Current YMCA LifeguardCertificationorAmerican Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Accepted.
Prerequisite 1: Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:
- Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim150 yardsusing the front crawl,breaststroke,or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is notpermitted. Swim goggles are allowed)
- Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs
- Swim 50 yards using the front crawl,breaststroke,or a combination of both
Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed).
- Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 – 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
- Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

- Work is performed in an indoor or outdoor aquatic environment.
- Have the ability to physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard.
- Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
- Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
- Visual acuity isrequiredto seeand observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.Must be able to see and recognize aquatic distress above and below the water surface.
- Abilityto respond properly to a medical emergency is necessary.
- Abilityto sit and stand for long periods of time is required, as well as the ability to hold breath under water when necessary.
- Jobrequireshigh levelsof alertness and concentration.
