Lifeguard

Under immediate supervision, performs lifeguard duties at a municipal beach or swimming pool. Teaches beginning and advanced swimming instruction. Monitors swimmers and provides emergency assistance when needed. Cleans and maintains the pool and pool area, including the filtration system. Transports youth and adults and performs related duties as required.

Typical Tasks

• Assists in patrolling and supervising swimming activities at public pools and beaches.
• Rescues persons in danger of drowning.
• Acts as a lookout at assigned stations.
• Administers first aid in emergency situations.
• Patrols unguarded beach areas and checks for violations of regulations.
• Enforces rules and regulations through disciplinary measures.
• Conducts swimming lessons and assists with aquatic programs.
• Removes debris and hazards from swimming areas.
• Ropes off swimming areas and posts storm warnings.
• Attends staff meetings and reports accidents and incidents.
• Maintains and supervises lifesaving equipment.
• Assists in locating, restoring, or reporting lost articles.
• Handles issues arising from large crowds at beaches and pools.
• Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications include a High School Diploma or GED, with two summers of experience in outdoor or indoor pools in a municipal setting. Must possess current certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. A valid Ohio Driver's License or State ID is required, except for those under 18 hired as Seasonal Lifeguards.

Responsibilities include ensuring patron safety, enforcing rules, maintaining cleanliness, testing pool chemistry daily, inspecting equipment, and opening/closing the pool. Proper uniform must be worn at all times. Roving between pools may be required based on operational needs.
