Shifts: 5am-9am, 9am-1pm
Job Summary
Under supervision of the Aquatics Director or Head Lifeguard and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the lifeguard is responsible for supervising swimmers during recreational and fitness swims; administering First Aid; exercising control of swimmers; and maintaining all safety and sanitation procedures according to the policies of the Upper Palmetto Aquatics Department and State Swimming Pool Operations Codes. The Lifeguard will also assist the Aquatic Director with various branch activities such as special events.
Responsibilities
- Ensure the safety of facility patrons
- Maintain constant surveillance of the pool area
- Enforce all facility policies, rules, and regulations
- Respond to patron inquiries and concerns, provide branch information as needed
- Inspect the aquatic facility daily and report unsafe conditions and equipment
- Complete records and reports on patron attendance, water chemistry, incidents, and accidents
- Maintain effective relationships with members, participants, and staff
- Participate in staff meetings and trainings
- Conduct aquatic facility maintenance as assigned
- Maintain a safe, clean, welcoming pool area
- Promote teamwork and communicate aquatics programs, rules, and regulations
- Perform other duties as needed
Qualifications
- Must be at least 15 years old
- Current nationally recognized Lifeguard Certification (e.g., American Red Cross, YMCA, ILTP Ellis, Starguard, Boy Scouts of America). If not certified, must complete the American Red Cross Lifeguard course within 120 days of employment.
- Certifications in CPR, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, and O2 (must obtain within 30 days if not current)
- Professional, mature image with excellent interpersonal skills
- Positive attitude aligned with YMCA mission
- Physical ability to perform rescues and maintain alertness
- Ability to communicate effectively during emergencies
- Ability to perform all required tasks including emergency response, rescue, and sanitation
