Job summary

The City of Hammond is seeking lifeguards for the summer season at Zemurray Pool. This seasonal position offers flexible hours from May to August.

Qualifications

Job description

Lifeguard at Zemurray Pool

The Lifeguard works at Zemurray Pool, ensuring the safety of patrons and staff; providing information regarding facility maintenance of water quality, providing life safety, communicating and enforcing City of Hammond Recreation department regulations, and promoting good customer service.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Assist in taking admission fees for public recreational swimming and swimming lessons.
• Participate in maintenance of the facility including filtration, chlorination system, cleanliness, sanitation, minor repairs, and maintenance; clean restrooms, empty trash cans, and perform other duties as assigned.
• Ensure the safety of patrons, watch for and prevent unsafe conditions, accidents, or occurrences, and notify patrons and the Head Lifeguard/Pool Coordinator and/or Recreation Supervisor or Director of any incidents.
• Administer first aid when required and report all accidents immediately.
• Perform other duties as assigned by Recreation Administration.

Lifeguard Qualifications / Skills:

• Knowledge and ability to evaluate water conditions at aquatics facilities.
• Ability to adjust programs as necessary to ensure the safety of visitors and staff.
• Swimming proficiency and comfort in all types of water conditions.
• Ability to judge and evaluate evolving dynamics of individuals participating in aquatic activities to assess their safety.
• Knowledge of on-site protocols, operational procedures, and safety policies.
• Knowledge of methods and techniques for providing emergency medical services on-site.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Work Experience, & Qualifications:

Education Required: Age 16 or older; High School Graduate preferred.

Certifications:

• Current American Red Cross or YMCA Standard First Aid Card.
• Swim Class Instructors should possess a current Water Safety Instructor Certificate.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

Must be available from 5/19/2025 - 8/31/2025 per week. Hours flexible, as needed. (Seasonal Position, Summer Job)
