Job description

Safety, Sun, and Service

Are you looking for a summer lifeguard job with a purpose? At Inspiration Hills, the waterfront is one of the most popular places on camp. We are looking for responsible, attentive individuals to join our team. You won't just be guarding water; you will be creating a safe, fun environment where campers can make memories.

What You Will Do

As a lake waterfront lifeguard, your primary focus is prevention and safety.

Watchful Eye: Maintain a vigilant, focused watch over the swimming area to ensure every camper is safe.

Boating Support: Assist campers with life jackets, canoes, and kayaks, helping them launch and return safely.

Beach Maintenance: Keep the beach and dock areas clean, organized, and ready for fun.

Teamwork: Work closely with counselors and program staff to manage large groups during free time.

The Lifeguard coordinates and directs the waterfront program in cooperation with the Chaplain and Program Director. The Lifeguard is directly responsible to the Program Director.

(The Executive Director has overall authority at Inspiration Hills.)

Requirements
  • First Aid and CPR certified
  • Lifeguard certificate (If you are not yet certified, but are a strong swimmer, we may be able to help you find/pay for a certification course.)
  • Minimum ages: 18 for head Lifeguard, 16 for Lifeguard

Paid Position: Competitive weekly or hourly pay.

Living Expenses: Meals are provided while campers are on-site, making this a great way to save money during the summer. Housing arrangements may be made based on circumstances.

Community: Be part of a close-knit ministry team.

General Responsibilities

  • Participate in as many training sessions as possible.
  • Be familiar with and ready to act upon the general policies of camp.
  • Minister to the spiritual development of campers.
  • The Lifeguard is primarily a safety coordinator, guarding against accidents, drownings, and disciplinary problems.

Pre-Camp

  • Attend training if offered.
  • Read and study materials given to you and develop ways to use them in your program.
  • Think of alternative daily plans in case of inclement weather and be prepared to share them.
  • Double check with the Chaplain and the Program Director prior to camp to request that all necessary or wanted items be available. Plan ahead! Do not assume that these items will be available: ask ahead of time. Also, if you know of traditions that you want to continue or discontinue, please communicate this ahead of time.
  • Report to camp early for staff meetings and to set up before campers arrive each week.

At Camp

  • Carry out assigned duties.
  • Welcome campers as they arrive and help them settle in.

As director of waterfront programs the Lifeguard must establish rules and routines that will be conducive to a safe and positive lakefront.

  • Schedule swim test to permit campers to be in the deep area. (Note: Floating Dock is in deep area.)
  • Establish a buddy system and stick to it.
  • Ensure all campers, volunteers and staff are aware of lake area rules.
  • Establish safe practices for canoeing and for other activities using aquatic equipment.
  • Be pro‑active in programs. Do not expect that things will just happen.
  • The Lifeguard is responsible for the care and maintenance of the lakefront and the waterfront equipment. This includes a first aid kit.
  • One radio will be issued to the head Lifeguard who is expected to stay in contact with the main camp.
  • The Lifeguard has the authority to clear the lake (for weather) or to stop any activity that he/she believes to be unsafe or dangerous. If there are any questions, those involved may discuss their concerns with the Chaplain or Program Director.
  • Help each camper to have a deeper appreciation of and relationship with God and Jesus Christ.
  • Help each camper to respect camp property and to understand the importance of conserving natural resources.

After Camp

  • Participate in each post‑camp wrap up, discussion, and evaluation session.
  • Correspond with campers if at all possible. (Follow‑up postcard, note, etc.)
  • If hired on as full‑time summer staff, the Lifeguard will also partake in other responsibilities as directed by the Chaplain and the Program Director.
