Job summary

City of Bryan is seeking a vigilant lifeguard to monitor pool activities, enforce safety rules, and respond to emergencies with swift actions.

The role requires excellent swimming ability and a current Lifeguard Certification or ability to obtain one. Part-time seasonal work with flexible hours and opportunities for continued employment through Summer 2027.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 16 years of age.
• American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification or ability to obtain within department time frame.
• Excellent swimming skills and knowledge of rescue techniques and CPR.
• Strong customer service and safety awareness in a pool environment.

Responsibilities

• Monitor pool areas and maintain continuous surveillance of patrons.
• Ensure safety rules and regulations are followed; respond to emergencies with appropriate action.
• Perform water rescues and provide first aid/CPR when needed.
• Maintain pool area cleanliness, safety, and compliance with policies.

Job Summary

Monitors activities at a City of Bryan swimming pool to prevent accidents and quickly respond to aquatic and pool facility emergencies.

Essential Job Functions

• Monitors pool areas as assigned.
• Maintains continuous surveillance of patrons in and around the swimming pool.
• Maintains order in the pool and adjoining areas.
• Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards.
• Acts immediately and appropriately to secure the safety of patrons in the event of an emergency.
• Performs appropriate water rescues when necessary; performs first aid or CPR when needed.
• Spots hazards or potential hazards and takes measures to prevent accidents.
• Communicates with other lifeguards and facility staff about the need for additional assistance or equipment in an emergency.
• Delivers excellent customer service to all patrons.
• Observes, enforces, and educates patrons about the rules and regulations of the facility.
• Completes all required inspections and reports and submits them to the proper person or office.
• Maintains a clean, safe, and sanitary facility.
• Maintains appropriate fitness level to perform all essential functions of the position.
• Continually practices safe work habits and alerts management about safety and other workplace concerns.
• Reports for duty at the times specified and ensures a high standard of personal presentation and appearance is maintained per policy.
• Attends mandatory training, orientations, and other staff meetings as scheduled.
• Adheres to the policies, rules, regulations, and procedures of the City of Bryan and the Parks and Recreation Department.
• Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Required:

• Must be at least 16 years of age.

Preferred:

• Previous Lifeguard or aquatic experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of:

• Practices and techniques of water safety.
• Practices and techniques of pool maintenance.

Ability to:

• Maintain fitness level (swimming, strength, and endurance) to successfully perform all position responsibilities, including the ability to pull significant weight through water.
• Remain watchful and alert at all times while on duty.
• React quickly and calmly in emergencies.
• Observe and analyze situations quickly and objectively and, using good judgment, determine an effective and efficient course of action to be taken with due regard to the task, hazards, situation, and circumstance.
• Communicate effectively with patrons, supervisors, and other employees.
• Demonstrate regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
• Comply with all City and departmental administrative directives, policies, and procedures.
• Work effectively as an individual and as a team member.
• Be constantly alert and aware of the hazards involved and apply safety practices and principles in reporting and preventing accidents.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and communicate effectively with the public and other required entities.

Skills:

• Excellent swimming skills, plus skill in rescue techniques and procedures, first aid application, and resuscitation.

Licenses, Certifications & Special Requirements

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification or the ability to obtain the certification within the time frame set by the department.

Physical Demands

Physical demands include but are not limited to: swimming, sitting, talking, hearing, seeing, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, bending, crawling, climbing, balancing, using hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment, and lifting, carrying, and/or moving people and objects of varying weight. The type of work involves extreme care, concentration, fitness, and manual dexterity.
Must possess the ability to swim distances and dive to pool depths, as determined by testing/certification authorities, and to lift 150 pounds or heavier weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an outdoor swimming pool environment. There is exposure to various depths of water, slippery surfaces, wet and humid conditions, extreme temperatures, heights (up to 35 feet), noise, pool and cleaning chemicals, body fluids while rendering first aid and CPR , dust, pollen, and other airborne particles.

Equipment

Work shall be performed with tools, appliances, and equipment approved by those agencies and bodies that have control, authority, or approval of the design working ranges or limitations of those items; the employee has the responsibility to conform to those ranges and limitations.
Equipment may include but is not limited to: rescue tube, pocket mask, and whistle.
