Job summary

The Boothbay Region YMCA is seeking a dedicated lifeguard/health program assistant to support community health initiatives and safe aquatic activities at our YMCA facility in Boothbay Harbor, Maine.

Responsibilities include enforcing safety rules, teaching water safety, and providing excellent customer service to members and guests while working with a team to promote healthy living and youth development.

Qualifications

  • CPR and First Aid certification required within 60 days of hire.
  • Experience in supervising or guiding youth and the public in a community setting is preferred.
  • Ability to learn YMCA safety procedures and licensing standards.

Responsibilities

  • Promotes healthy living, social responsibility, and youth development in collaboration with the Department Director.
  • Provides water safety guidance to patrons and monitors activities for safety.
  • Maintains a clean, safe program environment and ensures compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Responds to emergencies including water rescues and administers first aid as needed.
  • Builds authentic relationships with participants and connects them to YMCA programs.

Position Summary

This position supports the work of the YMCA, a leading nonprofit to strengthen the community.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Works closely with the Department Director to promote healthy living, social responsibility, and youth development. Works with supervisor to create and implement procedures and/or programs and/or curriculum while ensuring safety, licensing standards, and the Y's reputation and providing the highest level of customer service. Collaborates with other staff in providing a welcoming program experience that is encouraging and accessible, and supports members in achieving their health and wellness goals.
  • Provides advice and guidance on water safety to patrons.
  • Maintains a clean and safe program environment. Ensures ongoing surveillance, compliance with health and safety regulations including rescue equipment safety, and meeting the standard of care.
  • Ensures patron safety by vigilantly monitoring activities, spotting potential hazards (including rough or dangerous play), and promptly addressing them.
  • Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds calmly to emergency situations including water rescues, and administers first aid and CPR as needed. Responds in accordance with licensing standards, Y policies and trainings. Completes related reports as required Builds effective, authentic relationships with participants and connects participants to the YMCA.
  • As a Mandated Reporter, recognizes signs of abuse or neglect and reports to supervisor and the appropriate authorities.
Non-Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Performs other tasks and projects as assigned.
Requirements

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk, hear, bend, lift, and swim.
  • The employee is also required to use hands and fingers to operate a standard computer keyboard or tablet; use a computer, mouse, printer, and copier; operate and move program equipment; and speak and hear using a telephone.
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The employee will lift and/or move up to 60 pounds.
Work Environment
  • Work is performed at a community campus that serves all people.
  • Work is occasionally stressful and requires ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and successfully cope with the pressures which are related to the position.
  • The campus facility is open early mornings, evenings, and weekends and the job may require attendance outside of regular business hours 9am - 5pm.
  • The noise level can be all volumes.
Essential Experience And Skill Requirements
  • CPR and First Aid certification required within 60 days of hire.
  • Team player, with superb interpersonal skills. An ability to work with co-workers and the public in a positive and friendly manner and resolve conflicts as needed.
  • Self-starter with the ability to multitask, work independently, and adapt to changing circumstances in a fast-paced environment.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn new software.
  • 15+ years old.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Certificatification.
Essential Education Requirements
  • High School degree or GED or working towards completion of high school.
