Job summary

Winnsboro ISD is seeking a Life Skills Aide at Winnsboro High School to support students with disabilities in developing independent life skills. Qualifications

Responsibilities

Job Description

The Applied Paraprofessional provides support to students with disabilities in a variety of educational settings. Under the direction of the special education teacher, the paraprofessional works with students to help them develop life skills that promote independence and integration into society. This includes assisting in the academic, social, and personal development of students by providing individual and group instruction, behavior management, and daily living skills training.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in Classroom Instruction: Support students with disabilities by reinforcing concepts taught by the teacher, providing individual or small group assistance in areas such as reading, writing, math, and social studies.
  • Promote Life Skills Development: Work with students to teach basic life skills including personal hygiene, money management, social skills, time management, meal preparation, and vocational training.
  • Behavioral Support: Assist in managing student behavior using appropriate techniques and strategies as outlined in students' Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) or behavior intervention plans (BIPs).
  • Monitor Progress: Track and document students' progress toward meeting life skills goals and report to the teacher or case manager.
  • Provide Social and Emotional Support: Encourage positive social interactions among students and model appropriate social behavior.
  • Assist in Physical and Mobility Needs: Provide physical assistance as necessary for students with mobility challenges, including helping students transition between activities or locations.
  • Assist with Daily Living Skills: Help students practice and develop skills that enable them to care for themselves and interact with their environment independently.
  • Collaborate with Staff: Work with the teaching team, therapists, and other support staff to implement individual education programs (IEPs) and modify instruction to meet students' needs.
  • Maintain a Safe Environment: Ensure the safety of students during classroom activities, lunch, field trips, and other school functions.
Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience: Prior experience working with students with disabilities, especially in a special education setting, is preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Ability to work with students with diverse abilities and needs.
    • Ability to follow directions and implement IEPs and other educational plans.
    • Patience, empathy, and a strong desire to help students succeed.
    • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Certifications: May require CPR/First Aid certification and/or other certifications as specified by the district or state.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift or assist students with mobility challenges, as well as participate in outdoor or physical activities.
