Job summary

Hamilton County Juvenile Court seeks a Security Officer to safeguard court facilities, courtrooms, holding areas, and public spaces. You will respond to resistance, maintain order, and ensure areas are free from contraband while supporting court staff and personnel.

Starting salary is $28.00 hourly; plan includes 40 hours per week with a varied schedule across 1st, 2nd and 3rd shifts. A background check is required; qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver’s license,

Requirements (Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification):
  • High school diploma or GED and 5 year of related work experience required.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Must possess and maintain auto liability insurance.
  • Must be 21 years or older.
  • Must be able to obtain OPOTA Basic Bailiff certification and successfully complete all required OPOTA courses upon hire.
  • Must pass background screening process.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associates or Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice.
  • Possession of an OPOTA Certification.
Special Working Conditions and/or Hazards:
  • Employees work indoors and are protected from weather conditions or contaminants, but not necessarily occasional temperature changes.
  • Employees work outdoors and may not be protected from weather conditions.
  • Exposure to individuals who may be unruly at times.
Job Duties:
  • Provides security and safety for Juvenile Court at its facilities, including in courtrooms, holding facilities, public areas, and Court for defendants, their families, the public, and court staff.
  • Appropriately responds to resistance from individuals who are not following court orders or who are at risk to harm others or themselves.
  • Ensures that court facilities are safe and free from contraband and weapons.
  • Assists all court personnel with security as needed.
  • Acts in capacity of a Juvenile Court Security Officer as needed.
  • Provides direct supervision of Security Officers, monitoring quality and quantity of work performed.
  • Provides feedback, coaching, and correction regarding performance and behavior.
  • Write performance reviews and conducts performance review discussions.
  • Communicates with direct reports to keep them updated on information and events within the Courts, as well as provides a forum for staff to address concerns.
  • Functionally supervises Security Officers who may not be direct reports, but are assigned to the Lieutenant's area.
  • Shares information about employee performance and behavior with other Lieutenants, Assistant Chief, and Chief, in accordance with expectation
  • Manages assigned area and provides direction for all Security Officers also assigned to the area.
  • Provides oversight of the area's daily activities and recommends changes to the area's procedures to the Assistant Chief of Security.
  • Oversees transportation of juveniles and adults in custody who are to appear in court on assigned floor.
  • Maintains records which indicate the specific location of defendants when they are on the assigned floor.
  • Writes files and evaluates incident reports, etc. for each case handled on assigned floor.
  • Manages shift assignments, schedule planning, training, and requests to meet necessary staffing levels for daily operations.
  • Works cooperatively with all Law Enforcement Agencies.
  • Serves Forth with Subpoenas, Emergency Orders and Warrants to members of the public as necessary.
  • Reports complaints regarding Security Officer staff from members of the public, Court staff, etc. to the Assistant Chief of Security.
  • Assists with recommended security and operational policies and plans for 800 Broadway, and recommends operating guidelines and procedures for assigned staff.
  • Provides recommendations regarding security/training equipment to the Assistant Chief of Security.
  • Assists Juvenile Probation Officers with arrests.
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
Summary of KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES required for the position:
  • Must possess analytical skills/abilities, which include: Ability to analyze quickly evolving situations relative to the safety and security of the courtroom, public areas and court holding; Ability to interpret legal requirements regarding youth and adult custody issues.
  • Must possess clerical/administrative skills/abilities, which include: Ability to effectively document incidents and use-of-force occurrences in a clear, concise and effective manner; Ability to review reports initiated by staff and provide constructive feedback to ensure reports are accurate, complete and clearly written, so they can be easily understood if needed for a court hearing.
  • Must possess computer/technical skills/abilities, which include: Ability to use computer systems including Microsoft Office and JCMS; Ability to maintain certification for RCIC, LEADS and NCIC.
  • Must possess project/process management skills/abilities, which include: Ability to direct staff and assist with program planning, development and operations, custody of the juveniles while in court, and the personal security of the Judges, magistrates and staff; Ability to recommend training for subordinate staff. Ability to provide coaching, feedback, and development opportunities to ensure that officers under supervision are able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and perform the other essential functions of their jobs effectively.
  • Must possess written and oral communication skills/abilities, which include: Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing; Ability to write reports of incidents that could involve injuries as well as issues regarding the arrest, confinement and legal rights of individuals involved with the court.
  • Must possess knowledge skills/abilities, which include: An understanding of a small law enforcement department operations and duties related to daily responsibilities with the Court.
