Job summary

The Nuclear Company in Columbia, SC is seeking a licensing engineer for its Regulatory team. You will support licensing strategies, document submittals, and compliance with NRC regulations, reports, and environmental requirements, reporting to the Director of Licensing.

Applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree in engineering and 5+ years in nuclear energy, with strong analytical skills, excellent communication, and the ability to work independently and with cross-functional teams.

About The Role

The Nuclear Company seeks a licensing engineer for its Regulatory team in Columbia, South Carolina. The role involves supporting development, implementation, and maintenance of licensing strategies and documents to ensure compliance with nuclear regulatory mandates. Reporting to the Director of Licensing, the candidate assists with interpreting regulations, preparing licensing submittals, and ensuring the company’s activities comply with all mandatory licenses, permits, and requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Licensing Document Support
    • Assist in preparing, reviewing, and revising licensing documents, including license applications, amendments, technical specifications, safety analysis reports, environmental reports, and other submittals.
    • Ensure accuracy, completeness, and technical adequacy of all licensing documents.
    • Develop understanding of current licensing bases and regulatory commitments.
  • Regulatory Interpretation & Analysis
    • Interpret and analyze federal, state, and local regulations related to nuclear energy.
    • Assess impact of new and revised regulations on operations and licensing.
    • Provide support to internal stakeholders on regulatory requirements and licensing strategies.
  • Regulatory Agency Interaction Support
    • Prepare responses to regulatory inquiries.
    • Participate in meetings and teleconferences with agencies such as the NRC.
    • Assist with regulatory inspections and audits.
  • Compliance Assurance Support
    • Help develop and implement compliance programs and procedures.
    • Assist with internal audits to verify adherence to licensing commitments.
    • Track and manage regulatory commitments and action items.
  • Technical Support
    • Support engineering, ops, and other departments on licensing matters.
    • Review design changes and operational procedures for compliance with licensing basis.
  • Training & Awareness
    • Develop training materials related to licensing requirements.
    • Promote regulatory awareness and compliance culture.
Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Nuclear, Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, etc.) or related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in the nuclear energy industry.
  • Experience with nuclear regulations, licensing processes, and guidance documents (NRC regulations, NUREGs).
  • Familiarity with reactor systems, safety analysis, or environmental regulations.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail‑oriented focus on accuracy and completeness.
  • Ability to interpret and apply regulations and technical standards.
  • Independent and collaborative work style.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Estimated Starting Salary Range

The estimated starting salary range for this role is $120,000 – $140,000 annually, less applicable withholdings and deductions. The actual salary offered may vary based on experience, qualifications, tenure, skill set, location, certifications, and other relevant factors.
