The Opportunity

Under the supervision of the Principal, the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) must evaluate the physical conditions of students and refer students to the appropriate resources as needed. Decisions made by the LVN require discretionary judgment and analysis.

Essential Functions

STUDENT HEALTH

  • Deliver specialized health care services to students as directed by a physician’s order and under the direction of a credentialed school nurse, and as indicated by the Individualized Health Care Plan and according to standardized procedural guidelines
  • Assess special education students requiring the direct services of a nurse; prepare health care plans for involved students; perform or supervise the implementation of require specialized health care procedures at school or while students are being transported.
  • Ability to administer prescribed medication ordered by a physician and monitors for any unexpected, abnormal or allergic reactions to medication.
  • Monitors and provides specialized health care procedures including sterile and/or clean urinary catheterizations, blood sugar monitoring, oral and/or tracheostomy suctioning, care of ostomies, nasogastric and/or gastrostomy tube care for students with chronic illnesses.
  • Provides first aid care and medically prescribed services.
  • Screens and conducts health appraisals for students and staff.
  • Provides follow-up evaluations on students as required.
  • Corresponds with parents on health needs of children.
  • Provides emergency care in situations such as anaphylactic shock, cardiopulmonary distress, respiratory distress, insulin reactions, and hypoglycemic reactions, seizures and other medical emergencies.
  • Develops policies, procedures and work standards for school health program.
  • Maintains security of health supplies.
  • Records immunizations, health findings, and other relevant health data in student information systems.
  • Ability to coordinate and facilitate services between the school, local health agency, and other community resources.
  • Monitors compliance of school health program with federal, state and local laws, regulations and policies.
  • Coordinates the organization and operational activities for the nurse’s office, including the first aid program and the school health program.
  • Prepares health reports for supervisor, board of directors and health department.
  • Instructs students in health education according to the state curriculum (K-12).
  • Recommends corrective action where problems are identified.
  • Conducts home visits when appropriate.
  • Respond to emergencies for special education students.
  • Travel to various school sites within the organization and perform a wide variety of nursing duties.
  • Assesses situations involving students’ safety, abuse and other health related issues for the purpose of identifying problems, referring for proper treatment and complying with legal requirements under the direction of the credentialed school nurse.

OFFICE FUNCTIONS

  • Serve as primary back up for the Receptionist during peak hours.

  • Contribute to positive school culture by developing strong relationships with CNCA students, families and staff.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Qualifications

  • Possession of a Licensed Vocational Nurse license by the State of California
  • Possession of a valid standard Firs Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate
  • Current Health Certificate (if applicable)
  • Current PPD or chest X-Ray
  • One (1) year prior professional nursing experience preferred
  • Current BLS card
  • Spanish and English fluency preferred
  • Ability to work independently and in a team in a fast-paced environment required
  • 1-2 years of experience working in urban schools or in organizational operations desired
  • Ability to understand and navigate the political, social, economic, legal and cultural context facing urban charter schools and the students they serve.
