JOB SUMMARY
The primary role of the Licensed Substance Abuse Professional is to assist in the delivery of a 24/7/365 service, utilizing a team approach, including direct and indirect interventions. Community Support Team (CST) provides direct support to adults with DSM-5 diagnoses of mental illness, substance use, or comorbid disorder with complex treatment needs. The service aims to increase and restore the beneficiary’s ability to live successfully in the community across emotional, behavioral, social, safety, housing, medical, educational, vocational, and legal domains.
GENERAL ROLE REQUIREMENTS
- Provide symptom stability by reducing psychiatric or substance use symptoms.
- Deliver restorative interventions for developing interpersonal, community, coping, and independent living skills.
- Provide psychoeducation.
- Act as first responder to de-escalate crises.
- Coordinate services and ensure linkage to community resources.
SUPERVISION REQUIREMENTS
Clinical supervision is provided by the licensed Team Lead, following NCAC guidelines. Licensed SA Professionals must participate in supervision as outlined in individualized plans.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide psycho-education as indicated in the Person-Centered Plan.
- Assist with crisis interventions.
- Support the Team Lead with behavioral and substance use disorder treatment interventions.
- Assist in developing relapse prevention and disease management strategies.
- Participate in the development, implementation, and revision of the PCP.
- Communicate beneficiary progress and the effectiveness of interventions to the Team Lead.
- Provide intensive case management and linkage/referral to formal and informal supports.
- Complete functional needs assessments to determine scope of services.
- Assist with beneficiary housing search, including engaging landlords, writing accommodation letters, and addressing housing crises.
- Assist with connecting beneficiaries to financial and in‑kind resources for household stability.
- Coordinate time at service locations as specified in the service definition.
- Participate in first responder on‑call system 24/7/365, coordinating resources according to consumer needs.
- Consult with medical and non‑medical providers, community supports, and incorporate their input into planning.
- Monitor and document recipient progress and effectiveness of interventions.
- Coordinate transition to other levels/type of care and oversee discharge planning.
- Practice standard medical precautions and use personal protective equipment.
- Ensure confidentiality and privacy of protected health information.
- Maintain records and report unusual and critical incidents within 24 hours.
- Familiarize with medications used by clients and policies regarding administration.
- Perform other duties as reasonably required and assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- One full‑time dedicated team member must be a licensed substance abuse professional: Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS), Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS or LCAS‑A), Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC), or Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC).
- Must meet the certification and licensure requirements recognized by the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board.
- Minimum of one (1) year documented experience working with adults with MH/SA or developmental diagnoses.
- Must hold a valid driver’s NC license and have reliable transportation.
- Must possess effective communication and documentation skills.
- Must agree to a random drug screening and a criminal history check.
- Must maintain strict confidentiality and practice within scope of practice.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is primarily performed in clients’ living environments and the community, potentially exposing employees to cigarette smoke, pets, pests, and variable temperature conditions. Physical demands include standing, walking, reaching, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and lifting up to 20–50 lbs. Vision and driving requirements apply.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to write legibly, possess basic word‑processing skills, and be willing to learn. Documentation requires a full‑service note for each contact. Requires flexibility in scheduling and availability to meet service needs and willingness to travel locally.
