Job description

Summary

The Rocky Mountain Region Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (RMRVAMC) Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders (SCI/D) Center provides comprehensive rehabilitative care for patients with spinal cord disorders. The program aims to enhance understanding of altered body functions due to spinal cord injury/disorders and to develop physical and social abilities for a full, rich life.

Qualifications

Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be considered tentatively but cannot be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed if qualified citizens are unavailable, in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Licensure: Valid, unrestricted licensure as a practical or vocational nurse in the U.S. or its territories or District of Columbia.
  • BLS: BLS certification is required.
  • Education: Graduation from an approved practical or vocational nursing school or equivalent military healthcare training accepted by the licensing body.
  • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Grandfathering Provision: May qualify if applicable, per VA standards.
  • Grade Determinations: Vary by grade, from GS-03 to GS-06, with specific experience and knowledge requirements outlined for each.
Preferred Experience

Experience with SCI/D and/or rehabilitation is preferred. For more details, visit VA Qualification Standards.

Physical Requirements

Includes visual acuity, hearing, speech, manual dexterity, and physical stamina to support patient care needs.

Duties
  • Provide supportive nursing and medical care during diagnostic and therapeutic visits.
  • Perform routine patient evaluations, document findings, and report deviations.
  • Educate patients and families on disease processes, medications, and treatments.
  • Recognize and respond to emergencies, including CPR and resuscitation.
  • Maintain safety and equipment standards, report hazards.
  • Perform administrative tasks, coordinate clinic operations, and manage supplies.
  • Adhere to safety, infection control, and environmental policies.
