  • Assist in patient assessments, including physical, psychological, and social evaluations under the supervision of the RN.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans by collaborating with RNs and other healthcare professionals.
  • Administer medications and perform clinical procedures as directed by the Health Care Practitioner (HCP), including IV therapy (when certified) and diagnostic tests.
  • Count controlled substances, syringes, needles, and sharps at the beginning of each shift and sign count logs.
  • Intervene using proper safety techniques and standard precautions in all clinical settings.
  • Respond to health emergencies and codes within standard guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively with other healthcare staff, including physicians, HSAs, and ancillary departments, ensuring information is relayed through proper channels.
  • Respect patient dignity and confidentiality in all patient interactions.
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings, training, and post orders as applicable per site contract.

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies

  • Proficient in nursing procedures, patient care protocols, and administering medications in accordance with established standards.
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures, safety techniques, and patient monitoring.
  • Ability to follow specific instructions and use sound judgment in emergent situations.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively interact with patients, staff, and physicians.
  • Ability to work under stress and remain alert at all times.

Minimum Education And/or Experience Qualifications

  • Licensure: Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN).
  • Experience: Experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in correctional medicine or similar environments.

Required Certifications and Licenses

  • CPR certification (must be current).
  • LPN/LVN licensure from the appropriate state licensing board.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in correctional healthcare settings or familiarity with policies and procedures specific to this environment.
  • IV therapy certification (preferred).
  • BLS certification.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform physical tasks such as moving patients, lifting medical equipment, and standing for extended periods.
  • Must be able to respond quickly to medical emergencies.

Work Environment

  • This position is located within a correctional facility, which may involve exposure to stressful situations, working with a diverse patient population, and adherence to strict security protocols.
  • This is a full-time role, typically working 3 days a week and every other weekend.

Summary

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) plays a critical role in assisting the delivery of patient care within a correctional facility. Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN), this position involves providing direct patient care, assisting in treatment planning, and implementing care plans. The LPN will also be responsible for assisting in clinical and technical aspects of care, administering medications, monitoring patient progress, and ensuring the safety and dignity of patients at all times.
