Job Description

The work involves performing routine nursing services at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation, including the Long-Term Care Facility, or Erie County Health Department Clinic. The incumbent provides routine nursing care to residents or patients, may assume charge responsibilities with minimal supervision, and may perform higher-level technical nursing tasks. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse, Physician, or other higher-ranking professional of the department. Supervision may be exercised over Hospital/Institutional Aide. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities
  1. Maintains equipment used in the care of patients;
  2. Administers and documents the administration of medications;
  3. Performs or assists with treatments and procedures;
  4. Teaches and/or assists with patient and family health care teaching as outlined on the care plan or as directed;
  5. Performs and records vital signs and weights;
  6. Administers internal feedings;
  7. Observes and monitors patient conditions and documents these in accordance with nursing standards;
  8. Informs nurse in charge of care provided to patients and status of patients’ condition;
  9. Reports incidents to nurse in charge;
  10. Develops and maintains interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, and hospital personnel;
  11. Performs charge duties when necessary and as directed;
  12. Provides for patient safety and comfort;
  13. Performs tasks normally assigned to a Hospital/Institutional Aide;
  14. Transport patients in acute and long-term care facilities;
  15. Participates in In-service education.
Additional Duties for ECMCC Positions

If assigned to the Erie County Long-Term Care Facility, the nurse also:

  1. Maintains communication and reports changes in resident condition to supervising Registered Nurse;
  2. Administers and documents medications, including IV infusions and IV medications;
  3. Performs EKG testing, pulse oximetry testing, and phlebotomy.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics

Good knowledge of basic nursing techniques, advanced technical nursing skills, infection control, medication administration, and pharmacology. Ability to apply therapeutic treatments as prescribed, understand and follow detailed instructions, keep accurate records, and demonstrate good interpersonal skills. Initiative, sound judgment, and the ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation are required.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a course of study in a registered School of Practical Nursing approved by the New York State Education Department and either:

  1. Possession of a license and current registration to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse issued by the New York State Education Department, or
  2. Possession of a limited Graduate Practical Nurse (GPN) permit with an LPN license within one year.
Special Requirements

For ECMCC positions: Possession of Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an approved ECMCC provider at the time of appointment and throughout employment.

For Health Department positions: Valid New York State Driver’s license and use of a private automobile at the time of appointment and throughout employment. Note: Not applicable to Erie County Medical Center Corporation.
