Summary Of Job
The wing nurse is responsible for providing direct nursing care to the residents, and supervision and direction of the day to day activities performed by the nursing assistants in accordance with current guidelines and regulations.
- Follow established standards of nursing practice and implement facility policies and procedures.
- Interpret existing policies and procedures to nursing assistants, restorative nursing assistants, residents, families and physicians.
- Provide direct resident care and give instruction to nursing assistants related to resident care.
- Obtain report from nurse being relieved and record sufficient information to implement appropriate follow-up action as necessary.
- Provide report to nurse coming on duty including sufficient information for follow-up action if necessary.
- Conduct resident rounds, reporting problems to unit manager/supervisor and initiating corrective action.
- Count narcotics, at the beginning and end of each shift.
- Identify safety hazards and initiate corrective action immediately.
- Identify resident problems and emergency situations, and initiate appropriate action.
- Participate in facility education programs, staff meetings, in-service education and committee meetings as assigned.
- Assume responsibility for compliance with federal, state and local regulations within the assigned unit.
- Counsel nursing assistants and recommend disciplinary action, when necessary, to the unit manager/supervisor.
- Participate in the employee evaluation process.
- Administer and document medication treatments per physician’s orders.
- Order medications and replace emergency box medications according to pharmacy protocol.
- Perform and document a comprehensive assessment of each resident.
- Develop an accurate comprehensive care plan based on each resident’s comprehensive assessment.
- Review and revise resident care plans as necessary.
- Participate in resident care conferences as assigned.
- Document resident care provided and resident’s response/lack of response to care provided.
- Report changes in resident’s conditions to unit manager/supervisor, physician, and responsible party as necessary.
- Follow facility admission procedures and communicate resident admission to other departments and physicians.
- Follow facility discharge/transfer procedures and coordinate with other departments and physicians.
- Listen to resident, family or physician concerns and initiate corrective action.
- Prepare nursing assistants’ assignments with unit manager and explain pertinent resident care.
- Document on residents’ progress notes as necessary and on monthly summaries as assigned.
- Practice infection control according to facility procedures.
- Participate in survey by authorized government agencies.
- Completes annual compliance and HIPAA training and exhibits behavior as set forth by the Code of Compliance in the performance of their duties.
- Adheres to the Organizations Policies and Procedures regarding the Compliance Program of the organization and is timely in reporting any possible concerns.
- Follows all local, state and federal regulations as they pertain to their position.
- Adheres to the Organization’s Policies and Procedures covering Privacy and Security in Compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Unit Manager or Shift Supervisor, as needed.

Educational Requirements
- LPN: Graduate of an approved School of Practical Nursing
Current license as an LPN in the state of Pennsylvania
Experience/Knowledge/Skills
- Knowledge of current nursing practices
- Knowledge of current pharmacological interventions and appropriate administration.
- Knowledge of state and federal regulations in Long Term Care.
- Working knowledge of Medicare/Medicaid and appropriate administration
- Basic computer skills.
