Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Documents in an accurate and timely manner to provide comprehensive offender medical records.
  • Provides standardized patient education within established nursing guidelines.
  • Transcribes reports at change of shifts.
  • Preserves confidentiality.
  • Provides physical care and treatments, administers medications, collaborates on treatment plans, employs infection control measures, and refers to Clinical Services staff as needed.
  • Assists physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with minor medical procedures.
  • Ensures ordering and restocking of medications and supplies.
  • May participate in restraining an offender for medical reasons when required.
  • Observes and reports the physical and emotional condition of offenders and treatment effectiveness.
  • Promotes safety and security of the clinical environment and proper handling of syringes, needles, narcotics, and instruments.
  • Operates clinical equipment available in the unit.
  • Informs supervisor of violations of safety through reports.
  • Attends training programs including the Basic Training Academy and Threat Pattern Recognition self-defense course.
  • May work any shift, weekends, and holidays.

This position provides skilled nursing care for the incarcerated offender in various clinic settings, this is a DAY SHIFT position. Thisposition will work every sixth weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday), and every third holiday.

What you will do:

LPN's are responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • documents in an accurate and timely manner to provide comprehensive offender medical records;
  • provides standardized patient education within established nursing guidelines;
  • transcribes reports at change of shifts;
  • preserves confidentiality;
  • provides physical care and treatments, administers medications, collaborates on treatment plans, employs infection control measures, provides referral to appropriate Clinical Services staff for new arrivals, crisis intervention, interviews and triages offenders, and performs instruction and orientation;
  • assists physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with minor medical and surgical procedures;
  • ensures ordering and restocking of medications and supplies;
  • may occasionally be required to participate in restraining an offender primarily for medical reasons;
  • observes and reports the physical and emotional condition of offenders including the effectiveness of medications and treatments during sick call and emergencies;
  • promotes and is accountable for safety and security of the clinical environment through conscientious observations and sensitive item/contraband control including counting syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments, and key control;
  • operates a variety of clinical equipment dictated by the type of equipment available in the assigned work unit;
  • informs supervisor of any violations of security or safety through the report writing process;
  • attends training programs as assigned, including successful completion of the Basic Training Academy and Threat Pattern Recognition self defense course;
  • This position may be required to work any shift, weekends, and holidays.
Minimum Qualifications:

Applicant must possess a current, valid license as a Licensed Practical Nurse from the South Dakota Board of Nursing.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • intravenous Certification;
  • long term and acute care experience;
  • experience as an LPN in a correctional environment.
Conditions of Employment:

The SD DOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. All job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screen and the candidate's ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

Individuals selected for the position will have the opportunity to carry Oleoresin Capsicum (OC/pepper spray) if desired. If OC spray is carried, the staff carrying OC spay will be required to have direct (level 1) exposure during the training program. Individuals selected for the position must successfully complete a written and practical self-defense exam and successfully complete CPR to AHA guidelines – this includes successful completion of the practical/hands on portion as well as the written exam. Selected individuals must possess the physical ability to successfully complete the practical self-defense exam, which involves the following:

  • lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;
  • stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;
  • use arms, palms of hands, and feet to deliver blows;
  • withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;
  • rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
  • get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions.

Additionally, TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
This position is eligible for Veterans’ Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
