Job Description
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) plays a vital role in supporting the health, safety, and daily care of students across Harvard Public Schools. This full-time position includes the provision of skilled nursing care within the school setting and during school-based activities. The LPN is a collaborative member of the educational team, by advocating for health and safety, intervening with actual and potential health issues, and actively collaborating with families, school staff, and community healthcare providers. The nurse fosters a climate of care, wellness, and prevention across the school community.
Qualifications
- Valid license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in Massachusetts
- CPR and First Aid Certification (must be maintained throughout employment)
- Ability to administer medications in a school setting (as per state guidelines)
- Knowledge of Massachusetts school health regulations and nursing standards
Preferred
- One or more years of pediatric or school-based nursing experience
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Experience with tracheostomy and G-tube care
Key Responsibilities
- Direct Student Care & Medical Support
- Provide nursing care under the direction and supervision of the RN.
- Provide individualized medical care, including tracheostomy suctioning, G-tube feeding, and medication administration per physician orders and care plans
- Deliver respectful, personal care services to students requiring support with activities of daily living
- Monitor and respond to changes in students’ health status during the school day
- Follow Individual Health Care Plans (IHCPs) and Emergency Care Plans (ECPs) as written
- Document all health interventions and maintain accurate, confidential records per state and district guidelines
- Serve as van monitor for students with complex medical needs
- Accompany assigned students on school transportation and field/community-based trips to ensure health needs are safely managed throughout the day
- Partner with the school nurse, educators, administrators, and families to support student health and learning
- Attend student support meetings and contribute nursing input as needed
- Serve as a steady, compassionate presence in the school community
Work Conditions & Physical Demands
- Ability to lift and assist non-ambulatory students (up to 50 lbs) as needed
- Frequent walking, standing, bending, reaching, and operating standard medical and office equipment
- Exposure to infectious diseases and biohazards
- Ability to remain calm and respond effectively in emergencies and under stress
- Transporting students periodically or accompanying students on school buses or vans may be required

- Attend mandatory and ongoing training related to school health and student-specific care
- Uphold ethical nursing standards and student confidentiality

Standard clinical and office equipment, including:
- Thermometer, AED, otoscope, audiometer, sphygmomanometer, glucometer, wheelchair, computer, copier
- Hoyer lift and stander
Work Year
Full-time position (Approximately 8am to 4:30pm)
