PRIMARY FUNCTION

The assistant is a skilled, technical worker performing physical therapy treatments and related duties as assigned by the therapist.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduation from an accredited school for Physical Therapist Assistants.
Therapy Experience, Other:
  • No experience required but desired.

COVID vaccination is preferred but an exemption will be entertained.

License:

Licensure by the Alabama Board of Physical Therapy. Verify at pt.alabama.gov

Source of Supervision:

Staff Physical Therapist/Clinical Director

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Stands, turns, bends, stoops, lifts, climbs, and uses physical motion daily. Must be able to stand for extended periods and walk extensively without extreme fatigue. Lift and carry equipment and supplies up to 50 lbs. unaided; over 50 lbs. with mechanical assistance or personnel. Operation of electrical equipment.

Interpersonal Relationships:
  1. Supervises Rehab Technicians.
  2. Treats patients after evaluation by a Registered Physical Therapist.
  3. Participates in in-service training.
  4. Consults with the physical therapist on patient progress and plan of care.
  5. Interacts with other departments regarding patient progress.
Responsibilities:
  1. Adheres to the APTA code of ethics.
  2. Reports to the Staff Physical Therapist/Clinical Director on physical therapy matters.
  3. Performs physical therapy procedures per the Plan of Care.
  4. Provides instructions for home treatment programs.
  5. Maintains equipment and supplies beneficial to patients.
  6. Maintains an encouraging attitude without false hope.
  7. Counsels patients and families on problems with advice from the therapist.
  8. Helps patients become physically, emotionally, and socially independent.
  9. Uses procedures in line with good patient care and reasonable expenses.
  10. Reports incidents or accidents in writing as they occur.
  11. Documents treatments according to department policies.
