Job Description

Licensed Opticians are responsible for selling & dispensing eyewear and accessories to patients. They ensure patients are fitted with the right‑size frames and dispense lenses with correct prescriptions and measurements. As a key member of the business, they provide technical expertise and customer service that ensures patient satisfaction and repeat business.

Responsibilities

• Deliver an extraordinary experience to each patient and provide complete understanding of customized recommendations for products and services
• Custom‑fit glasses and precisely place prescriptions in lenses
• Develop own clientele through outstanding service and referrals
• Assist co‑workers with difficult or complex product needs & prescriptions
• Stay current on company/industry products, procedures, manufacturer rebates, lens and frame types
• Take and return patient calls, update on order status, resolve issues and, when necessary, Escalate to Store Manager
• Retrieve patient charts and electronic health records
• Assist patients in selecting frames, lens type and treatments (tints, coatings, etc.) based on needs and facial measurements
• Educate patients on proper eyeglass and contact lens care
• Collect eye and face measurements to ensure proper fit
• Interpret prescriptions written by optometrist or ophthalmologist
• Create work orders for lab technicians, specifying lens details
• Follow up on all pending orders, verify timing, inform patients of delays, and notify when orders arrive
• Dispense glasses, inspect product, check fit, adjust if necessary, and ask for feedback
• Adjust eyewear to ensure visual acuity, proper fit and patient comfort using various tools
• Proficient in using tools such as pupilometers, PD sticks, lensometers, pliers, wrenches, frame warmers, etc.
• Communicate with technicians and/or store managers to provide additional patient information or order status updates
• Inspect final product for flaws; clean and polish lenses using cloths and solvents
• Clean and organize frame boards, displays, mirrors, work bench, office area, bathroom, and breakroom to maintain overall cleanliness and visual appeal
• Restock retail boards with new merchandise
• Understand product issues, analyze problems, and accurately answer patient questions regarding insurance, warranty, product materials, services, pricing, upgrades, promotions, etc.
• Collaborate with technicians, front‑desk associates, managers and optometrist
• Sell miscellaneous products such as cleaners, contact lens supply, sunglasses, safety glasses, etc.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma
• State licensure
• Optical dispensing experience
• Minimum of one year experience as an optician (strongly preferred)
• Experience with HIPAA requirements (preferred)
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Excellent customer service skills and pleasant demeanor; sales experience preferred
• Manual dexterity and hand‑eye coordination
• Dependability and punctuality
• Ability to lift up to 30 lbs, bend, kneel, and stand up to 8 hrs a day
