We are seeking a dedicated and detail‑oriented Licensed Optician/Optical Consultant to join our team. In this role, you will play a crucial part in providing exceptional patient care and supporting the optometric practice. As an Optician/Optical Consultant, you will assist in various clinical and administrative tasks including assisting patients with optical selections, completing sales, interpreting insurance benefits, pre‑testing, data collection, and ensuring a smooth and efficient workflow within the office.
Education and Experience
- HS Diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree preferred
- Healthcare/medical assistant experience preferred
- Optical License required
- Optical Experience required
- Familiarity with medical records management and medical terminology is strongly preferred.
- Understanding of vital signs assessment and physiology knowledge is advantageous.
- Proficiency in optical systems and retail math will be beneficial for this role.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively in a team‑oriented environment.
- Attention to detail, organizational skills, and a commitment to providing excellent patient care.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Perform preliminary eye exams and tests, including measuring visual acuity and assessing ocular health.
- Assist the optometrist during examinations by preparing patients and explaining procedures.
- Maintain accurate medical records and documentation of patient information.
- Manage appointment scheduling and patient flow to optimize office efficiency.
- Educate patients on proper contact lens care, eyewear options, and post‑examination instructions.
- Interpret insurance benefits and calculate correct patient responsibility amounts.
- Make optical lens recommendations in accordance with the Optometrist’s exam findings and recommendations.
- Close optical sales and deliver exceptional customer service.
- Dispense optical orders to patients, ensuring proper fit and patient education on eyewear.
- Ensure the cleanliness and organization of examination rooms and equipment.
- Utilize electronic health record systems such as Epic for patient management.
- Collaborate with team members to enhance the overall patient experience.
Sensory, Motor Requirements
- Required to stand, walk and sit; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands to handle or feel objects or controls; reach with hands and arms.
- Regularly required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and lift up to 25 pounds.
- Extensive use of computers.
- Ability to hear and speak clearly.
