Licensed Dental Assistant (EFDA)

The department of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery, division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry is seeking a Licensed Dental Assistant (EFDA), qualified in Expanded Functions to provide chairside assistance within the team-based dental clinic for both inpatients and ambulatory care. Will assist the dental providers and trainees during a variety of dental treatment procedures. Prepare patients and operatory for dental procedures. Taking and developing dental radiographs (x-rays). Provide patients with instructions for oral care following dental treatment procedures. Clean and maintain each operatory and lab areas following all HEIC and OSHA guidelines to ensure compliance. Provide excellent customer service. Must be a great communicator, able to multitask with the ability to anticipate the provider’s needs, while listening to the patient.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Creates a professional atmosphere that is clean and inviting to patients. Consistently follows established unit Infection Control Policy and Safety/Hazardous Communication, as well as Fire Safety Policy. Effectively performs all cleaning tasks, daily to ensure that dental operatory is maintained according to established environmental unit standards.
  • Prepares treatment rooms as needed for procedure, using the correct tools and equipment for provider ahead of each appointment. Must also be aware of what procedures are being carried out, so organization is essential to this position.
  • Tracks provider’s schedules and seats patients. Records vital signs and reports changes to providers as requested.
  • Assists chairside with all dental procedures including general dentistry, endodontic, periodontal, prosthodontic, restorative, preventive care as requested by the provider.
  • Treats customers (guests, patients, physicians, and other employees) with courtesy, respect, and caring behaviors.
  • May assist with administrative functions such as taking and updating patient dental histories and assisting with scheduling routine and follow-up appointments.
Expanded Function Duties
  • Take Vital signs (blood pressure /pulse readings – take and record)
  • Placing or removing retraction cord
  • Drying a root canal
  • Applying topical fluoride; applying fluoride varnish
  • Placing or removing a rubber dam
  • Removing or placing a periodontal dressing
  • Preparing and fitting stainless steel crowns
  • Taking alginate impressions for intraoral appliances
  • Placing or removing a matrix band
  • Preparing temporary crowns
  • Cementing temporary crowns or restorations
  • Performing vitality tests
  • Placement of temporary restorations
  • Removing temporary crowns
  • Removing excess cement
  • Fabricating athletic mouthguards, bleaching trays, fluoride trays, impressions trays, night-guards on models
  • Delivery of restorative material with dentist at chairside
  • Digital impressions
  • Performing bite registration
  • Applying bonding agents
  • Applying topical anesthesia
  • Etching teeth
  • All duties designated to Dental Assistants, under the same level of required supervision
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Three years of experience as a Dental Assistant.
  • Must be registered by the State of Maryland as a Dental Assistant Qualified in General Duties.
  • Must be a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA)
  • Must be a licensed Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA)
  • Requires current licensure by Maryland State Board of Dental Examiner in Dental Radiation Technology.
  • Requires CPR certification.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with EPIC and Shopping Cart.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills to interact with health care providers, patients, support staff, coworkers and visitors.
