Job description

Summary:

The Art Therapist/Expressive Arts Therapist reports to the Clinical Director/Unit Chief and the Clinical Director of Social Work and Counseling regarding professional standards, regulatory and licensing requirements, credentials/privileges, and continuing education. The therapist provides treatment to a diverse patient population, applying art therapy skills and interventions to help patients resolve personal and environmental issues related to mental or physical illness, aiming to restore them to their highest functioning level.

Responsibilities:
  1. Evaluate patients, establish treatment goals/outcomes, and implement patient care plans.
  2. Observe precautions, indications, and contraindications for all treatment procedures.
  3. Monitor patient progress, re-establish goals, and revise treatment plans according to department protocols.
  4. Communicate with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other team members regarding patient status and recommendations.
  5. Document clinical findings using LifeChart, maintaining confidentiality per hospital policy.
  6. Utilize art psychotherapy techniques, assessment tools, CBT, and trauma-informed art therapy to meet patient goals.
  7. Provide a safe, conducive learning environment adhering to policies, procedures, quality assurance, and infection control.
  8. Supervise undergraduate and graduate art therapy students, monitoring their progress and compliance with clinical requirements.
  9. Demonstrate competency in therapeutic processes as determined by supervisors.
  10. Participate in departmental in-services and obtain CEUs through external conferences to meet accreditation standards.
  11. Educate patients, caregivers, families, and healthcare professionals about art therapy and mental health counseling, providing training and in-services as needed.
  12. Review and update program materials, practices, and activities; recommend modifications to senior staff.
  13. Maintain and order program supplies and materials.
  14. Oversee the hospital art gallery, selecting artwork for display monthly.
  15. Develop community relationships and coordinate services for the Healing Arts Program.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.
Other Information:
Basic Knowledge:
  • Master's Degree in Art Therapy from an AATA-accredited program.
  • Registered Art Therapist (ATR) or Registered Expressive Arts Therapist (REAT); LMHC preferred.
Experience:
  • At least two years of relevant experience, preferably in an inpatient psychiatric setting with children and/or adolescents.
  • Knowledge of art therapy principles, psychosocial functioning, and expressive activities in psychiatric settings.
  • Ability to work with various visual and expressive arts mediums.
  • Understanding of aging processes, human development, and cultural considerations in patient care.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

Work is conducted in a hospital setting with significant patient contact.

Independent Action:

Performs duties independently within established policies; complex issues are referred to the director.

Supervisory Responsibility:

None.
