The AB performs deck department duties related to the operations and maintenance of assigned tugs and barges.

  1. General maintenance and repairs; deck maintenance, housekeeping, cooking, making tow or mooring and unmooring.
  2. Standing watch during the operation of the tug.
  3. Performs maintenance, repair, and sanitation on the tug under the direction of the Mate; performs maintenance, cleaning, and repair of tank barge machinery spaces and systems within capability, as directed by supervisor or Officer on Watch.
  4. Carry out projects as directed by the Officer on Watch.
  5. Fulfill duties and responsibilities related to and affecting the Company HSQE.

WORK CONDITIONS
  1. Must be able to live and work in close quarters and spend extended periods away from family.
  2. Work schedule and hours determined by boat. Typical schedule is 21 days on, 21 days off, with 12-hour shifts including holidays.
  3. Must be able to work outdoors in inclement weather, heat, and cold.
  4. Willing to attend paid training on and off scheduled work time.
  5. Must have reliable transportation and be able to drive to/from company-defined hub cities.
Qualifications, Competencies, and Certification Requirements
  • Must possess a valid TWIC Card.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's license.
  • Valid Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) endorsed as AB.
  • Valid USCG Medical Certificate required.
  • Passport preferred.
  • Tankerman PIC preferred.
  • Experience with at least one other maritime company preferred.
  • Must not have a DWI or DUI in the last three years.
  • Must not have more than 2 moving violations in the last 3 years.
  • Must satisfy all USCG physical requirements (CG-719K) and drug testing programs.
  • Valid state-issued birth certificate and social security card required.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • No pending criminal charges or probation.
  • Must be able to read and write English and understand verbal and written orders.
Physical Requirements
  • Walk 2-3 miles daily.
  • Step 2 ft vertically and horizontally.
  • Extend arms fully in all directions.
  • Climb a 90-degree ladder 25-30 feet, carrying weight.
  • Grip, hold, and pull 50 lbs.
  • Lift 75 lbs.
  • Lift and carry 50 lbs for 350 feet.
  • Sufficient vision and hearing as per USCG standards.
  • Verbal communication in English.
  • Sense of smell to detect vapors.
  • Pass pulmonary function test with minimum score of 75%.
  • Ability to enter and exit hatches quickly in emergencies.
  • Ability to wear PPE including respirators, foul weather gear, PFDs, gloves, and boots.
  • Use firefighting and spill containment equipment.
