Job summary

Washington County Free Library in Hagerstown, MD, seeks a detail-oriented Library Assistant II (PT) to support public services at the Fletcher Branch. You will handle circulation, patron registration, and phone duties while covering shifts at multiple branches as needed.

The role emphasizes excellent customer service, clerical tasks, and the ability to work evenings and weekends within a 20-hour weekly schedule. Some locations and duties may vary with scheduling needs.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and the ability to successfully use a computer.
• Minimum two years of customer service experience working directly with the public in a library or in a high-volume customer service setting.
• Minimum of one year of recent library experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Processes and sorts the daily delivery of library materials; checks items for damage.
• Provides library service coverage at other WCFL branch locations as assigned.
• Carries out and explains circulation policies and procedures to patrons; resolves questions with a positive attitude.
• Answers the phone and greets patrons to the library in a friendly manner.
• Checks materials in and out, registers new patrons for library cards, and updates patron records.
• Shelves materials and assists with inventory and shelf reading.
• Assists patrons with basic computer questions and self-checkout machines.
• Works independently on assigned shifts, including opening and closing the branch as scheduled.
• Maintains continuity of public service when working independently by assisting patrons with routine questions.
