Job description

Job Title: Library Media Specialist

Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Reports to: Principal

Pay Grade: Teacher Pay Scale

Primary Purpose:

Supervise and manage the school library/media, makerspace, and STEM center. Provide reading support to develop students’ academic skills using District-approved curriculum. Serve as a teacher, materials expert, and curriculum advisor to ensure that library/media, makerspace, and STEM center are involved in instructional programs of the school.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Master's degree from an accredited college/university preferred at the time of hire and required within a specified time frame.
  • Valid Texas teacher, librarian, or Technology Applications certificate or endorsement preferred.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Serve as an information resource for users of library/media center materials.
  • Provide professional learning opportunities for teachers on the availability and use of district technology resources.
  • Promote, understand, communicate, and prepare students and staff to be good digital citizens.
  • Support the campus reading program and literacy initiatives.
  • Assist students, staff, parents, and community in identifying, locating, and interpreting information from various sources.
  • Provide technical support to students and staff.
  • Assist with student device deployment.
  • Assist with management and inventory of instructional materials.
  • Promote, model, and provide leadership in the selection, coordination, evaluation, and use of technology in curriculum and instruction.
  • Stay current regarding laws, policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Withdraw obsolete materials and equipment following district policies and procedures.
  • Provide professional learning that integrates media, technology, and activities to enhance the curriculum.
  • Lead in the utilization of technology.
  • Attend professional development sessions and participate in campus/district committees.
  • Manage and promote the makerspace.
  • Inform and train teachers on new resources and equipment, facilitating their use.
  • Prepare budget requests, administer library budgets, and maintain records.
  • Address school/community needs through communication, involvement, and conduct.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Instructional leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of district policies on instructional resources, library books, and digital resources.
  • Knowledge of library databases.
  • Ability to develop and deliver training to adults and students.
  • Ability to instruct and manage student behavior.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to analyze data.
  • Knowledge of instructional technology, curriculum, instruction, and makerspace best practices.
Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Frequent district-wide and occasional statewide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Prolonged computer use and repetitive hand motions.

Experience:

Minimum of three years of classroom teaching experience. Reading Academy completion preferred (elementary only).
