Job description

Zimmerman Associates Inc. (ZAI) is recruiting Library Material Handlers to join our team at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. Material Handlers help make the Library's vast collection accessible by retrieving, sorting, moving, shifting, and shelving print materials. This is an active position. Qualified candidates will work on multiple tasks, in teams and individually, in the Library’s book stacks and across three buildings. Must be dependable and able to follow instructions and pay attention to detail. Possibility for advancement to Library Clerk. Candidates with some library experience will be preferred.

Pay: 19.81 HRLY plus $4.93 (H&W) Fringe Benefits

Responsibilities

  • Sort, organize, and distribute incoming books by classification numbers and according to the library’s distribution plan
  • Shelve and interfile materials in the library’s shelving stacks following the library’s classification system sequencing
  • Break down bins and trucks containing new acquisitions, scan barcodes, reorganize materials into containers, and identify out-of-scope and damaged material
  • Transport materials in book trucks and bins to designated locations across three buildings
  • Create containers and pack print materials into the appropriate-sized boxes
  • Shift materials in the shelving stacks to make space for new additions, following complex shifting plans, and add, adjust, or remove shelving
  • Input data related to inventory control and tracking for items received, organized, transported, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, BA/BS preferred
  • Previous experience in a library setting, including book processing, shelving, and/or shifting, preferred
  • Experience with barcodes, complex inventory numbering systems (particularly decimal systems)
  • Experience in learning and following complex procedures and policies
  • Ability to move from task to task and to work both on teams and individually
  • Strong work ethic and reliability/punctuality
  • Strong organization skills
  • Good interpersonal skills

Desired Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the general physical arrangement of the library and the classification systems used in libraries (required to sort and organize library materials)

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to move from place to place within the location; lift, push/pull, hold/carry items weighing up to (50) pounds
  • Must be able to stoop and lift materials from the ground and bottom shelves
  • Ability to push carts and trucks weighing up to 200 pound
  • Ability to work in cool and dusty environments

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday:
    • 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM; 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM: 7:30 – 4:00 PM
