APPROXIMATE STARTING DATE: Spring 2026

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Cal Poly Maritime Academy Library invites applications for a pool of part‑time librarians as needed. Responsibilities may include any combination of the following:

  • Supporting library instruction and teaching library workshops.
  • Providing reference services through varied modalities – in person, email, chat, and Zoom.
  • Representing the library at campus‑wide outreach events.
  • Creating and updating online resources, including webpages, guides, and tutorials.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Librarian.
  • Appointments from the part‑time pool are temporary, so applicants must be available on very short notice.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a non‑tenure‑track position in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting library instruction and teaching library workshops.
  • Providing reference services through varied modalities – in person, email, chat, and Zoom.
  • Representing the library at campus‑wide outreach events.
  • Creating and updating online resources, including webpages, guides, and tutorials.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MLS/MLIS from an ALA‑accredited program or equivalent institution by the time of appointment.
  • Experience providing reference, instruction, or outreach services to a diverse population.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collegially in a team setting.
  • Demonstrated competency working with computer applications and the ability to learn new software applications.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Ability to interact sensitively and effectively in a multi‑cultural environment.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three or more years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in or potential for developing and leading engaging library‑related instruction sessions.
  • Experience in promoting library‑related programs.
  • Experience working in an academic library.

SALARY COMPENSATION: Salary is commensurate with education, qualifications, and experience. The full‑time classification salary range for the position is:

  • Anticipated pro‑rated monthly hiring range based on hours (10–20 per week) and experience: $1,572–$3,144.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • The typical classroom and office environment is in a two‑story building with elevator access.

ELIGIBILITY TO WORK:

  • Applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship or authorization to work in the United States within three days from the date of hire.
  • A background check investigation (including a criminal records check) is required prior to employment.
