Job summary

City of Aurora is seeking a Library Clerk at Martin Luther King, Jr. Library (9898 E. Colfax Ave., Aurora, CO 80010).

You will help customers with circulation, answer questions, and provide basic technology assistance. Hours include days, nights, and weekends, with a Tuesday–Saturday schedule and a mix of shifts. Ideal candidates have strong customer service skills, basic math, and the ability to work with a diverse community.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Salary to be commensurate with experience The hiring range for this position is $17.82 - $22.28 per hour. The deadline to submit applications is September 1st, 2026. Overview of Department / Position: The Library and Cultural Services Departments vision is to empower an environment of lifelong learning and cultural enrichment by stimulating learning and literacy, inspiring creativity, and integrating arts, culture and history into the lives of Aurorans. We have two divisions within the department: Library and Cultural Services, both offering a variety of free services to the community, including 5 public libraries, the Aurora History Museum and Historic Sites, Aurora Fox Arts Center, The People's Building, and community events, programs, and activities for all ages. The City of Aurora's Library and Cultural Services Department is looking for a Library Clerk to provide the highest level of customer service assisting library customers with circulation services, account help, finding library resources, answering general questions, and providing basic technology assistance. Strong, friendly customer service skills, attention to detail, and a genuine interest in helping people from a diverse community of all ages, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds are essential for success in this position.

Location & Schedule: Martin Luther King, Jr. Library (9898 E. Colfax Ave., Aurora, CO 80010) - Hours will include days, nights and weekends, but will primarily be a Tuesday - Saturday, 9:15 AM - 6:15 PM schedule. Hours and location are subject to change dependent upon department needs. May be required occasionally to substitute at another Aurora Library location based on staffing needs.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Provides friendly and professional customer assistance for library service needs.
  • Checks books/other items in and out through computerized system.
  • Answers general customer questions regarding library policy, procedures and customer accounts.
  • Answers basic reference, reader's advisory, general customer questions, and provides basic computer usage support.
  • Redirects more advanced reference questions to Reference staff as appropriate.
  • Operates a cash register and credit card machine, conducts customer payment transactions, maintains a cash drawer.
  • Performs data entry into library system, spreadsheet and other databases.
  • Sorts, processes, shelves and assists with other general library materials inventory management duties.
  • Retrieves paged items from shelves.
  • Assists with research and programs as needed.
  • Proactively ensures that library space is neat and organized (e.g. furniture and equipment is in order, shelves are well organized, displays are creative and refreshed regularly).
  • Provides friendly, efficient and professional service to customers in-person, by telephone and email.
  • Conducts general office/administrative/clerical tasks as needed.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. Education: High School Diploma or GED Experience: At least 6 months customer service and/or retail experience. Experience within a library system is a plus. Knowledge: Customer service techniques Routine software/computer systems including the internet Email, word processing, spreadsheets, database input/use Inventory/customer transaction systems. Abilities: Ability to deal with stressful situations with tact and diplomacy Exercise good judgement in difficult and/or tense situations. Tactfully and judiciously implement customer conduct policies. Communicate with diverse customers/staff of all ages in a professional, age and culturally, appropriate manner Cash handling experience Use general office equipment, computers, calculators, and copy/fax machine Pay close attention to detail. Perform basic mathematical calculations Follow oral and written instructions Ability to speak Spanish a plus

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel: When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel. Physical Demands: Light to sedentary physical work requiring the ability to lift 40 pounds with or without assistance Frequent lifting, carrying, walking and standing Hand/eye coordination to operate office equipment, carts, and moveable shelving Vision to read and interpret reports, documents and other written information Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens Work Environment: Works primarily in clean, comfortable environment with shared work stations and equipment Equipment Used: Frequently uses computer keyboard and telephone, fax machines, copiers and microfilm equipment This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
