Library Assistant - Part-Time - Angier Branch

Position Summary
An employee in this position demonstrates excellence in customer service skills while performing routine duties associated with library operations including circulation, reference, and general patron services. Work is performed under the supervision of the Angier Library Branch Manager. The employee works 12 hours weekly.

Duties and Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

  • Responds to routine inquiries and refers patrons needing professional assistance to appropriate sources or online reference materials.
  • Performs circulation duties such as registering patrons, checking items in/out, collecting fines, managing patron accounts, and troubleshooting minor issues.
  • Sorts and shelves library materials according to established procedures.
  • Locates library materials for patrons, including books, periodicals, DVDs, and audiobooks.
  • Instructs patrons on accessing online and digital materials, including e-books.
  • Inspects returned books for condition and notes repair needs.
  • Assists patrons with office equipment like fax, copier, and computers.
  • Selects substitute titles when requested materials are unavailable.
  • Retrieves items from stacks manually or using pushcarts.
  • Generates reports and fulfills reservation holds and requests.
  • Performs cleaning, safety checks, and ensures library cleanliness and security.
  • Assists in creating book displays and supports various library projects and programs.
  • Helps patrons with self-checkout, coin machines, and holds.
  • Performs shelf reading, identifies missing items, and addresses cataloging questions.
  • Balances cash drawer daily and prepares deposits.
  • Performs opening and closing duties.
  • Works collaboratively to prioritize patron experience and community needs.
  • Supports team duties and performs other related tasks as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma.
  • No experience required; experience in a library or customer service preferred.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of computer technology and library operations.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to interpret regulations and procedures.
  • Ability to operate office equipment and learn new skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks.

Physical Demands

Must perform light work exerting up to 10 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally. Physical abilities include crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, perceiving sounds, kneeling, lifting, manual dexterity, reaching, standing, stooping, speaking, walking, and visual acuity.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a library setting, with a schedule that may include mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends, at various library locations.
