Job summary

Lewiston City Library is seeking a Library Assistant to support the public in finding materials and to perform circulation duties in a customer-focused environment.

Under the direction of a Lead Library Assistant, you will shelve materials, assist with Reader’s Advisory, and help users with databases, printing, and account transactions. Some tech tasks, including 3D printing, may be required; evening/weekend shifts could be needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience in customer service and money handling preferred.
  • Familiarity with basic software and technology.

Responsibilities

  • Circulate and shelve library materials and maintain orderly spaces.
  • Provide excellent customer service and assist patrons in locating materials and using services.
  • Handle reader's advisory, printing/faxing, databases, and financial transactions; explain library policies and protect confidentiality.
  • Assist patrons with technology, including printers and other equipment; support 3D printing and other library tasks.
  • Position may include other duties; evening and weekend shifts may be required.

We do that through dynamic programs and presentations, taking materials and programs out into the community, curating a broad selection of reading material and media, and offering a variety of meeting, making and learning spaces.

Position Summary:

Under the direction of a Lead Library Assistant, Library Assistants assist the public in finding library materials and provide a variety of circulation duties in a customer focused work environment.

Essential Functions:
  • Perform a variety of routine duties in the library including circulating materials, shelving materials and maintaining the order and appearance of the collection and public space.
  • Responsiblefor excellent customer service while assisting the public in locating and requesting library materials, providing Reader’s Advisory, use of library printing/faxing services, accessing library databases, resolving customer accounts, processing financial transactions, applying and explaining policies, and demonstrating patron confidentiality.
  • Tasks may also include physical processing of library materials, assisting with patrons with technology and 3D printing, and other technical library tasks.
  • Position will include other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:

Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate. Education or experience with customer service,money handling, experience with basic softwareand technology skills required.

Knowledge and Abilities:

The ideal candidate must demonstrate strong attention to detail;demonstrate excellent customer service skills;be ableto maintain confidentiality;display strong professional written, spoken and interpersonal communication skills; have technology skills including general knowledge of databases,software packages, printing and scanning. Must work well within a team. Position will include other duties as assigned. Evening and weekend shifts may be required.

Working Conditions:

Work setting is professional, team oriented, having both routine and variable tasks. Work pace and pressure is variable, but frequently fast-paced and high pressure. Primary functions require the following: ability to work in an office and operate office equipment and technology; ability to stand for extended periods of time; ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels; ability to bend and twist, sit, stoop, kneel, push, pull, and crawl; ability to lift 35-40 lbs., ability to carry 30 lbs., ability to reach in all directions.
