Job summary

The City of Abilene, Texas is seeking a Library Assistant who will greet patrons, help register for library cards, operate the self-check system, and resolve account issues.

You will work at the circulation desk, update records, shelve materials, provide Readers Advisory, assist with online catalog and digital resources, and support interlibrary loan tasks.

Strong customer service skills and ability to handle money and fines, plus the required high school diploma, are essential.

Qualifications

• One year of public contact and/or customer service experience.
• Familiarity with basic library procedures and computers.
• High school diploma or GED required; associate's degree preferred.
• Valid Texas drivers license or ability to obtain within 90 days preferred.

Responsibilities

• Serves at the circulation desk checking in and out library materials, registering patrons, collecting overdue fines, and assisting patrons with information.
• Accurately enters and updates patron and library material information in the library database.
• Shelves materials, reads shelves, and creates displays to keep the collection neat and orderly.
• Provides Readers Advisory service to patrons and staff.
• Assists the public in using the online catalog and digital resources.
• Provides hands-on assistance to patrons with computer use, printing, and photocopying.
• Maintains, organizes, and cleans the audiovisual collection.
• Assists with holds, claims returned and missing items on a routine basis.
• Assists with interlibrary loan tasks.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
