Kern Community College District in Bakersfield is seeking a Library Assistant I to provide general clerical support in the library, check materials in and out, and assist patrons with both routine and technical inquiries. The role carries 19 hours per week for 11 months at the Panorama Campus.

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform generalclerical work in support of the various sections of the library;check materials in and out of the library; provide general andtechnical assistance to library patrons.
Perform general clerical work such as typing, duplicating, enteringinformation into computer, processing incoming mail and maintainingvarious files and records; answer telephones and direct callers toappropriate personnel; take and relay messages as appropriate; record and maintain various statistics on library usage.
Check out books and other library materials; receive and processreturned materials; inspect condition of materials returned; sortincoming books and prepare book carts; renew materials byphone.
Assist in the processing of library materials; evaluate andmaintain orderliness of shelved materials; pull and route materialsin need of mending, binding, repairing or discarding; clean andrepair materials as directed; glue, re-label or tape books asneeded.
Issue library use cards; explain the policy for the library card;contact patrons with overdue library materials; receive and receiptoverdue fines; count and record cash received.
Provide general and technical assistance to library patrons; instruct and aid patrons in the use of various library equipment;assist patrons in the use of computer indexes; answer reference anddirectional questions.
Maintain records of periodical subscriptions; check in newperiodicals and prepare for display or introduction to the librarycollection; route specific periodicals to designated personnel anddepartments.
Operate a variety of equipment including a copier, microfilmreader, intercom system, television and library securitysystem.
Train and provide work direction to student assistants; assistother library personnel as directed. Assist with inventory oflibrary book collection and supplies as assigned.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and oneyear of general clerical experience.
