Job summary

Northwestern University Oak Grove Library Center in Waukegan, IL, seeks a Library Assistant to prepare items for long-term storage and organize them according to high-density shelving standards. The role is full-time and 16-month term starting September 1, 2026.

Responsibilities include creating work orders, labeling trays, scanning items into the inventory system, unloading deliveries, and maintaining accurate counts and documentation.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs and push carts weighing up to 300 lbs.
  • Capable of reaching, pulling, and standing stationary for long periods of time.
  • Ability to use specialized software.
  • Experience working with detailed processes.

Location: Waukegan, Illinois

Job Summary

This position is located at the Northwestern University Oak Grove Library Center in Waukegan, IL. The Oak Grove Library Center is not close to public transportation.

Under general supervision, the Library Assistant is responsible for preparing all items and necessary materials prior to the long-term storage of items. This position is responsible for organizing all items according to high-density shelving standards and ensuring that all items are accessible and accurately accounted for both physically and in the inventory management system.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible 16-month term position with an expected start date of September 1, 2026.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Creates work orders, accurately scans items into the inventory management system.
  • Places proper I.D. labels to the correct trays, duplicates and affixes barcode labels to books.
  • Unloads full totes of books from delivery van and vacuums books.
  • Sorts books by size and fills appropriately sized book trays, documenting count and date.
  • Builds trays as needed.
  • Receives and stores supplies from vendors.
  • Participates in routine housekeeping.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or the equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs and push carts weighing up to 300 lbs.

  • Ability to use specialized software.
  • Experience working with detailed processes.

  • Warehouse storage experience.

Salary & Benefits

Target hiring pay for this position will be starting at $18.42 per hour. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
