Job summary

Qualifications

Job description

Important Recruitment Information:
Current vacancies include one (1) full-time benefited and one (1) part-time non-benefited Library Assistant in the Reference and Local History Services Division. The eligibility list from this recruitment may be used for future part-time vacancies in the same division.

Under general supervision, performs complex paraprofessional library work; provides information and assistance to the public; participates in specialized library activities; and performs related work as required.

Supervision:

Receives general supervision from a Senior Library Manager or other management staff. May exercise technical or functional direction over clerical staff and volunteers.

Management reserves the right to modify work assignments and make accommodations for qualified employees to perform essential functions.

  • Interprets and applies library policies and procedures; accesses and retrieves information for patrons and staff.
  • Advises and assists patrons in using library services and tools.
  • Establishes and maintains effective customer service; provides customer service training.
  • Completes or supervises clerical duties, maintains records, verifies information, researches discrepancies.
  • Assists with collection development, including ordering and inventory control.
  • Prepares exhibits and displays.
  • Assists with programming, including story times, book clubs, and events.
  • Participates in community outreach and events.
  • Prepares signs, flyers, pathfinders, and other customer aids.
  • Contributes to library-related educational programs and participates in meetings and committees.
  • Engages in professional development activities.
  • May supervise clerical, part-time, and volunteer staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

  • Automated library circulation systems.
  • Public library principles and programs.
  • Library classification, cataloging, and bibliographic terminology.
  • Data collection and report preparation.
  • Community outreach and service promotion.
  • Applicable laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Record keeping principles.
  • Office practices and technology, including computers.
  • English language skills.
  • Customer service techniques.

Ability to:

  • Perform library tasks accurately with minimal supervision.
  • Use computers to access, retrieve, and update information.
  • Organize work and manage projects.
  • Learn and interpret laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Coordinate projects and prioritize tasks.
  • Perform clerical work and maintain records.
  • Operate office equipment and library systems.
  • Meet deadlines and work independently.
  • Communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Exercise tact and judgment.
  • Establish positive working relationships.

Education and Experience:

Equivalent to high school diploma and one year of library experience. A college degree in Library Science or related field is highly desirable. Library experience is also highly desirable.

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid California Class C Driver License and proof of insurance are required.

Physical Demands: Mobility to work in an office setting, use standard equipment, and lift up to 50 pounds; vision and hearing to communicate and read materials.

Environmental Elements: Work is indoors with moderate noise; may interact with upset staff or public.

Working Conditions: Regular attendance required; may work evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Disaster Service Worker: Employees may be assigned to emergency response duties during disasters.
