Job description

Job Overview

The Librarian provides students and teachers with intellectual and physical access to materials in various formats (books, periodicals, videos, DVDs, computer software, etc.). They offer instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using information and ideas. Additionally, they collaborate with other educators to design learning strategies that meet students' needs.

Roles and Responsibilities
  1. Operate and supervise the Media Center, including planning and evaluating the program. Follow state and local policies, including standards of quality, accreditation, school board policies, and library media guidelines. Establish policies and routines that facilitate access to information and create an environment conducive to learning. Maintain records, prepare reports on budget, inventory, and circulation systems.
  2. Provide formal and informal instruction in information skills, material production, and instructional technologies. Promote skills, knowledge, and attitudes regarding information access and communication. Develop and manage a collection of resources that support the curriculum and meet the needs of students and staff. Assist the principal in ensuring the effective use of instructional materials and participate in curriculum planning.
  3. Assist teachers in utilizing information resources, acquiring instructional materials, and integrating information skills into the classroom. Promote literacy and the enjoyment of reading, viewing, and listening.
  4. Supervise library assistants, volunteers, and aides to ensure effective clerical routines. Consult with and advise the administrative staff regarding the library media program.
  5. Stay current in the field through courses, staff development, conferences, and professional reading.
  6. Promote the importance of the library media program and publicize its services and resources to the school community.
  7. Perform related work as required.
Qualifications
  • Holds or is eligible for a Virginia Teaching license with a Library Science endorsement.

Salary Level: Licensed

This is an itinerant position between Creighton's Corner Elementary and Rosa Lee Carter Elementary. It is a one-year-only position.
