Job description

Primary Purpose

The librarian creates a dynamic program establishing the library as a central element of the school, positively impacting student achievement, learning, literacy, and school culture. The librarian supports best instructional practices and curriculum standards through the integration of resources and opportunities.

Qualifications

Education/Certification

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university

Texas teaching certificate

Valid Texas school librarian certificate or learning resources certificate or endorsement

Special Knowledge/Skills

Effective communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills

Proficient in working with media/computer technologies

Strong organizational skills

Experience

Minimum of 5 years experience teaching in a public school setting preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Information Literacy: The librarian offers information literacy instruction that enables stakeholders to efficiently locate, accurately evaluate, ethically use, and clearly communicate information in various formats.
  2. The librarian provides opportunities for learners and educators to access, apply, and evaluate print and digital resources for inquiry, academic, and personal needs.
  3. The librarian practices and models the ethical and legal gathering and use of information, technology, and media.
  4. The librarian includes opportunities for collaboration among members of the learning community.
  5. The librarian provides opportunities to help learners become creative problem solvers and independent users and producers of ideas and information.
  1. Inquiry: The librarian provides access to information and programs for inquiry-based learning as well as support for both student and professional learning.
  2. The librarian creates opportunities to cultivate curiosity through a carefully curated collection in a variety of formats as well as identification and exploration of real-world problems and developing strategies to solve those problems.
  3. The librarian promotes inquiry approach to learning for students to pursue, create, share, and grow knowledge.
  4. The librarian offers professional learning opportunities that promote best practices in inquiry-based teaching and learning.
  1. Reading: The librarian promotes reading as an essential skill for learning, personal growth, and enjoyment.
  2. The librarian encourages students to read a variety of literature for information and pleasure by providing access to physical and virtual collections.
  3. The librarian supports, supplements, and elevates literacy instruction through research-based strategies and participation in state and local reading initiatives.
  4. The librarian curates materials that reflect diversity and maximize student choice.
  5. The librarian curates materials to support the needs of the curriculum and the state standards.
  6. The librarian provides programs that encourage collaboration with other libraries, information institutions, and community partners.
  1. Digital Learning: The librarian provides equitable access to curated and open access information, technology, and media.
  2. The librarian promotes the ethical use of engaging technology applications and tools across all content areas for discovery, collaboration, critical analysis, creation, and demonstration of learning.
  3. The librarian actively provides an equitable, diverse, and open collection of digital resources.
  4. The librarian models and encourages ethical and legal guidelines for gathering and using digital intellectual property, understanding current copyright rules, and inspiring others to engage in positive digital citizenship practices.
  1. Environment: The librarian creates an essential, safe, inclusive, and flexible environment.
  2. The librarian cultivates a sense of community and respect while representing diverse points of view.
  3. The librarian promotes an environment that is safe, inviting, accessible for all.
  4. The librarian develops and maintains a diverse collection of resources and activities appropriate to the curriculum and all learners.
  1. Leadership: The librarian incorporates leadership activities, best practices, and professional learning across campus, district, and professional communities, and advocates for stakeholders.
  2. The librarian fosters a culture of collaboration and innovation to empower teachers and learners.
  3. The librarian advocates for and protects users’ rights to privacy, confidentiality, age-appropriate principles of intellectual freedom, and equitable access.
  4. The librarian actively seeks opportunities to engage in campus planning, district planning, professional learning, and continuing education.
  1. Metrics: The librarian utilizes metrics of measurability involving services to students and teachers to align the library program with campus and district goals.
  2. The librarian strategically utilizes a variety of data points including campus and district goals and strategic plans to develop program activities, collection development, resource management, and circulation needs.
  3. The librarian reviews national and state library standards to align program services.
