Job description

The work involves performance of librarian duties and the planning, directing and supervising of a specialized unit in the management of the Integrated Library System. General supervision is received from a higher level librarian or administrative superior. Supervision is exercised over the work of professional, paraprofessional, clerical, and volunteer staff. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Recommends, plans and implements new types of services based on patron needs.

Provides input in regard to policy recommendations and revisions.

Assigns duties, supervises and evaluates departmental or unit staff; identifies and recommends training needs.

Implements and/or enhances library automation projects and computer services; develops ongoing needs assessment.

Performs original cataloging and classification and may design appropriate systems of information organization and retrieval methods.

Coordinates, tracks and documents problem-solving efforts with vendors and users in the library systems of the library.

Advises and implements training requirements for the library staff on appropriate library software.

Recommends, documents, and communicates appropriate user access levels and groups throughout the library system.

Under general supervision of the Director of Library Information Systems, provides planning, implementation, management and advancement of the Integrated Library System and associated products or applications; customizes applications and proposes the development of new ones, actively involved in solving service problems and supporting new capabilities for the Integrated Library System.

Performs varied and/or specialized professional library work in library systems.

Prepares statistical and narrative reports, including annual reports, reports for grants, and prepares data related to budget requests.

Supervises the work of professional, paraprofessional, clerical, and volunteer personnel.

Keeps informed of professional developments through participation in professional organizations, system meetings, workshops, continuing education courses and reading professional materials; maintains a broad knowledge of operating systems, programming languages and software.

Leads technology-related groups, or actively participates as a representative to cross-functional groups; attends and actively participates across library functional areas to enable library systems support.

May be responsible for library facility or unit of library facility and security of building.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of modern principles and practices of library science;

Thorough knowledge of on-line and web based information resources;

Thorough knowledge of relational database systems and SQL (Structured Query Language);

Good knowledge of modern library organizations, procedures, policies, aims and services;

Good knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision;

Good knowledge of the applications of computer technology to library operations and library services to patrons;

Working knowledge of systems administration, MS SQL Server, and Active Directory;

Good oral communication skills with individuals and groups of varying age, educational and experiential levels;

Good knowledge of standards or protocols that retrieve or reuse data to allow interaction among library systems or applications;

Skill and accuracy in the performance of technical library tasks;

Analytical skills;

Ability to carry out library policies and procedures.

Ability to supervise in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

PROMOTION

Two (2) years of permanent competitive class status as a Librarian I (Integrated Technologies).

OPEN COMPETITIVE:

A graduate library degree from a library school within New York State which is registered by the State Education Department or from a library school program which is accredited by the American Library Association and two (2) years of post masters professional level experience, or its part time equivalent, managing an Integrated Library System or comparable system.

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT

Possession of a valid New York State Public Librarian's Professional Certificate from the New York State Education Department.
