POSITION: SCHOOL LIBRARIAN

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • B.A. or B.S. degree with a major or minor in library Science.
  • New Mexico state teaching certificate with library science endorsement K-12.

Principal when at the school. The Library Services Coordinator during assigned times.

JOB GOAL:

To provide staff and students with a wide variety and range of library media and services that will encourage intellectual growth to aid staff and students in acquiring the skills needed to become effective lifelong library users.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Operate and supervise the library to which assigned.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directives.
  • Maintain open communication and cordial public relations with media, staff, teachers, administrators, sales representatives, and others.
  • Provide training for the library assistants to carry out their responsibilities.
  • Arrange book fairs, audio-visual showings, library displays, bulletin boards, promotional activities, and exhibits to interest library users.
  • Oversee the neatness and attractiveness of the library and its displays.
  • Prepare and administer the library budget.
  • Direct and assist in media production.
  • Catalog, maintain, and supervise audio-visual hardware operation.
  • Keep library materials and equipment in working order.
  • Eliminate obsolete materials from collections.
  • Make repairs on media: books, periodicals, software, hardware, and others.
  • Take annual inventory of library materials and prepare lists of missing media to discard.
  • Maintain current inventory of supplies.
  • Operate the circulation desk and keep circulation files.
  • Evaluate, select, and requisition new media.
  • Assist teachers in selecting books and instructional media, and make media available to supplement instruction.
  • Supervise clerical routines for library operation.
  • Ensure media are properly shelved and organized.
  • Prepare magazines for binding, process, and shelve them.
  • Supervise filing of catalog cards, files, catalogs, maps, pictures, and periodicals.
  • Maintain cataloging system for all media and instruct staff and students in its use.
  • Maintain a broad collection of media and resources to meet school needs.
  • Collaborate with administration and staff to integrate the library into the educational program.
  • Stay informed on library media trends and practices.
  • Participate in workshops and professional associations.
  • Participate in curriculum meetings.
  • Conduct in-service workshops for staff.
  • Inform staff about new media acquisitions.
  • Arrange interlibrary loans.
  • Ensure regular library media use across grades K-12.
  • Work with teachers on assignments involving library resources.
  • Provide orientation and instruction in library skills.
  • Promote student engagement with library resources through activities.
  • Assist students in locating and using reference materials.
  • Advise students on reading and media choices.
  • Supervise student media assistants.
  • Perform other library operation tasks.

Performance will be evaluated according to the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
