Job description

The Librarian will provide friendly and sympathetic customer service to our diverse community; create and deliver enriching and fun programs; work with a passionate team to plan and execute special projects; manage budgets and make purchasing decisions for library collections and programming supplies; apply for and manage grants; work with a wide variety of technologies and computer applications to execute daily duties and projects; engage in a team atmosphere of creativity and enthusiasm; act as a functional lead when a supervisor is not available.

  1. Provide information assistance in person, over the phone, and online. Analyze patron requests to determine information needs and assist in providing or locating that information. Answer complex reference questions using library catalog, the Internet, and electronic resources.
  2. Plan, create, and lead educational, fun, and engaging programs utilizing a variety of materials, venues, and methods.
  3. Manage multiple collection budgets and make purchasing decisions for assigned library material collections (book and/or media categories) and programming supplies. Manage and submit reports for City purchasing credit card, as assigned.
  4. Research grant opportunities, write grants, and monitor awarded grants to ensure compliance with grant agencies. Prepare reports, manage budget, compile and analyze data, and other information related to awarded grant programs. Develop and share best practices with other libraries.
  5. Assist the Librarian Supervisor in the research, analysis, and compilation of information; projects of a professional nature such as the library business plan, outreach, programming, outcome-based performance measures, and collaborations with other libraries and agencies. Assist and make recommendations on the layout of material collections, furniture, and programming spaces.
  6. Monitor, update, and maintain public computers and online catalog with assistance from the City's Information Technology department. Assist patrons in use of public computers, including use of Internet, email, saving documents, and accessing library resources. Troubleshoot, document, and report computer problems. Oversee customer compliance with library policies and procedures, as well as federal, state and, local laws.
  7. Schedule and conduct training and instruction for library staff on a continuing basis on the use of integrated library system, equipment, online resources, software, and specialized educational technology to keep staff knowledgeable and capable of providing excellent customer service.
  8. Utilize online vendor selection and ordering tools, print review, and other media sources to make purchase decisions. Exercise professional judgment to anticipate demand and collection needs. Use statistical data, reports, and other tools to assess usage and popularity of materials. Research, evaluate, select, and recommend purchases of digital and other electronic content, emerging technologies, and new formats.
  9. Participate in staff, community, and professional meetings to contribute to discussions and actions related to patron and library services, needs, and issues. Conduct library outreach services and represent the library to the citizens, to the business community of Bedford, and within professional and civic organizations. Develop and deliver informational and educational presentations in professional settings.
  10. Assist with various aspects of overall library administration including short- and long-range planning and formulation of library policies and procedures. Enforce and interpret library policies according to legal guidelines.
  11. Collaborate and assist with City magazine submissions and post library programs on City website. Assist with social media content. Compose City Council updates. Manage online library calendar and the electronic marquee sign.
  12. Help manage the library’s interlibrary loan service, as assigned.
  13. Evaluate and recommend electronic resources for purchase. Maintain usage statistics of online electronic resources.
  14. Perform other assignments and handle special projects as required.
  15. Regular and timely attendance is required, as well as the ability to get along with others in a professional and cordial manner.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Acts as the functional lead on evenings and weekends or in absence of the Library Director and Librarian Supervisor.

Master's Degree in Library Information Science or related field from an American Libraries Association accredited college or university; and one year related experience and/or training. Experience in use of the Internet in a public library setting and web page development, as well as grant writing skills are highly desirable.
