Job summary

Waco ISD is seeking a Librarian to support the media center and assist students in effectively using instructional materials and resources. The role includes helping students locate materials, reinforcing core subjects, and maintaining circulation operations in a school setting.

Responsibilities cover cataloging, creating educational materials, operating AV equipment, and organizing displays. A High School diploma is required; an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Library Science is preferred,

Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Library Science or related field is preferred.
  • Prior experience working with children is desirable.

Librarian

Waco ISD – Waco, Texas

Position Purpose

Under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, to assist certified professional employees in the media center to enable students to effectively use the instructional materials in the center, and to acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities to take full advantage of library materials and resources.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students in locating reference and other instructional materials, and in developing knowledge, skill and abilities to gain independence and fully utilize library materials and resources.
  • Assist in reinforcement in reading, language arts, mathematics, computer instruction, media and other skills.
  • Assist in maintaining the circulation desk operations and circulation files.
  • Work with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning.
  • Operate audio visual equipment as needed.
  • Assist in cataloging and filing learning materials.
  • Construct, copy, distribute and use educational materials.
  • Serve as a reference guide for students.
  • Arrange book displays, exhibits and other items to provide an appropriate learning resource environment and maximize students’ interest in reading and learning.
  • Assist with the selection of library materials and resources, and in weeding out older outdated materials and books.
  • Assist in the utilization and maintenance of instructional and non-instructional library equipment, including a personal computer if necessary.

Additional Duties

Perform any other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • Use personal computers and instruct students in their use (including creating documents, word processing and using the Internet to conduct research).
  • Perform complex arithmetic operations.
  • Work with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.
  • Follow directives of teacher, media specialist or other supervisor, and assist students with respect to instructional and non-instructional tasks.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
  • Effective writing and communication skills.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Library Science or related field.
  • Prior experience working with children (desirable).
